Ball was read at this time:- <br /> ., C. <br /> II <br /> ~ "This is to thank you for your recent action in reinstating me to the position <br /> I held on the Eugene Fire Department prior to my having been called away for <br /> I I: active duty with the Armed Services. <br /> I I have already interviewed Chief Nusbaum relative to my reinstatement however, <br /> Ii <br /> 30 I. and was informed by him at that time that my position on the Department was <br /> ~:l <br /> ,{ irrevocably filled by one of the other less ~ualified members of the Depart- <br /> [,: <br /> ;1 mente <br /> L Mr. Nusbaum also advised me that should I wish to stand on my rights in the <br /> ,'I <br /> ,I matter, I would in the final analysis, have him to buck thoughout the entire <br /> j' <br /> I affair. <br /> II It also seems that a couple of Lieutennents or Shift Leaders have been pro- <br /> i <br /> I! moted during the seemingly, convenient absence of other members of the depart- <br /> 'i'( ment, while away with the respective units of the Armed Services, two members <br /> h , <br /> 'I of which are more eligible for the positions mentioned than one'of the men, <br /> Ii <br /> II who in their absence, has, outside of the realm of Civil Service, now been <br /> I' advanced to this post. <br /> ,I <br /> II In any event, this spector of the future, if I may call it that, along with <br /> i.! <br /> , the certain recollections of similas sycophancy in the Department in the <br /> ,i <br /> Ii past, had prior to my reinstatement by yourselves, caused me to accept a <br /> I; position elsewhere and influences me at this time to not disturbe further, <br /> II the vacuous incomprehensiblaties of the executive aspect of the Department. <br /> This, then Gentlemen, is in effect, my resignation from my reinstated status <br /> II &n the staff of the Eugene Fire Department and I respectfully request that <br /> I' <br /> ,~ it be accepted as such. <br /> II With best ~ishes for the untimate welfare of the Fire Department. " <br /> I <br /> I, <br /> I The matter was referred to the Fire and Water Committee to report back at <br /> II <br /> !I the next meeting. <br /> 11 <br /> I In regard to the proposed assessment for the costs of the sewer on <br /> i: <br /> " Kincaid, Harris and Potter streets, between 25th and 30th, Attorney Calkins <br /> 'i explained that since the cost of constructing the sewer against the lots owned <br /> I' <br /> I. <br /> 31 !: by the City would be in excess of the amount that could be bonded-there was <br /> I: no provision made for taking care. of this amount.
