DISCUSSION_AND RECOMMENDATIONS IN REGARD TO SIGN CONTROL - A FIELD TRIP MAS .TAKEN <br />IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE FACTS REGARDING THE USE OF NON-CONFORMING SIGNS BY <br />MOTELS LOCATED ON WEST 6TH AND 7TH AVENUES. AFTER DISCUSSION ON THE SIGN AND <br />ZONING ORDINANCES AND ~HE LEGISLATIVE AND ADMINISTRATIVE POLICIES AND PRACTICES, <br />THE COMMITTEE CONSIDERED APPLICATIONS FOR VARIANCES FOR THE WIL MAR MOTEL LOCATED <br />AT 571 WEST 6TH AND BROADWAY MOTEL LOCATED AT 659 EAST BROADWAY. <br /> <br />IT WAS RECOMMENDED ,BY THE COMMITTEE THAT THE "tWO ABOVE LISTED APPLICANTS BE <br />GRANTED VARlANCES FOR OVERSIZE SIGNS IN A C-I ZONE AND THAT THE PLANNING COM- <br />MISSION MAKE A STUDY OF THE ZONING ORDINANCE WITH RESPECT TO REQUIREMENTS FOR <br />SIGNS IN A C-I ZONE, ESPECIALLY'THOSE ZONES LOCATED ON WEST 6TH 'AND 7TH AVENUES <br />ANDON'EAST-BROADWAY. <br /> <br />2. DISCUSSION REGARDING THE PROPOSED ORDINANCE TO REGULATE THE INSTALLATION, <br />MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR OF GAS APPLIANCES, PIPING AND APPARATUS - THE,COMMITTEE <br />DISCUSSED THE HISTORY OF THE PROPOSED ORDINANCE AND THE BASIC PROBLEMS AND <br />QUESTIONS FACING THE CITY. DURING ~HE DISCUSSION IT WAS SUGGESTED ~HAT PRO- <br />FESSIONAL PEOPLE FAMILIAR WfTH THE GAS INDUSTRY SHOULD BE CONSULTED TO AID THE <br />COMMITTEE .AND ~HE COUNCIL TO DETtRMtNE THE VALIDITY AND PRACTICALITY .OF ANY <br />ORDINANCE WHICH MiGHT BE PROROSED TOR PASSAGE. <br /> <br />To ACCOMPLISH THIS END IT ~AS SUGGESTED THAT PROFES~IONAL PEOPLE IN THE PETROLEUM <br />INDUSTRY, THE NATIONAL WARM AIR INSTITUTE, THE NATIONAL BOARD OF FIRE UNDER- <br />WRITERS AND OTHER SIMILAR GROUPS MIGH.T BE ASKED TO LEND PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE. <br /> <br />THE COMMITTEE RECOMMENDED THAT THE MAYOR .APPOINT A :COMMI TTEE OF PROFESSIONAL <br />PEOPLE TO STUDY THE PROPOSED ORDINANCE AND TO MAKE A RECOMMENDATION FOR 'A <br />WARM AIR HEATING CODE TO THE'E~D THAT THE 'BEST POSSIBLE ORDINANCE ~R CODE <br />ON GAS AND WARM AIR HEATING.MIGHT BE ADOPTED. IT WAS FURTHER RECOMMENDED <br />THAT AN EXPENDITURE OF UP TO $250.00 BE AUTHORIZED WITH SUCH FUNDS TO COME <br />FROM THE EMERGENCY FUND IN'ORDER THAT THE COMMITTEE MIGHT HAVE AVAILABLE SOME <br />MONEY TO PAY THE COST OF.SUCH A STUDY. MEMBERS OF THE GAS INDUSTRY, PETROLEUM <br />INDUSTRY, ARCHI TECTURAL SOCI.ETY, MECHANI CAL ENGI NEERSAND OTHER LI KE GROUPS <br />WERE SUGGESTED AS POSSIBLE SOURCES OF PROFESSIONAL PEOPLE TO SECURE FOR THIS <br />COMMI TTEE.' THE CITY ENGINEER EXPLAINED THAT PARENTS Or. <br />SCHOOL CHILDREN HAD REQUESTED THAT A WALKWAY BE PROVIDED TO ALLOW CHilDREN WHO HAD <br />TO TRAVEL THESE STREETS TO BE ABLE TO DO SO SAFELY. THE CITY ENGINEER RECOMMENDED <br />THAT A GRAVEL WALK BE INSTALLED rROM OLIVE STREET ALONG THE SOUTH SIDE OF CREST <br />DRIVE, AND rROMCREST DRiVE ALONG THE WEST SIDE OF WILLAMETTE TO THE ENTRANCE TO <br />DUNN SCHOOL. IT ~AS ESTIM~TED THAT THE COST WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY $200~00. THE <br />COMMI TTEE REC;OMMENDED THE I NSTALLATI ON AS OUTL I NED ABOVE AT THE APPROXI MATE COST <br />OF $200.00. <br /> <br />2.
