PETITION FOR SANITARY SEWERS IN THE AREA EAST Of CHAMBERS STREET BETWEEN LORANE
HIGHWAY AND WHITBECK BOULEVARD IN ACCORDANCE WITH PETITIONS ON fILE AND INDI-
VIDUAL REQUESTS - IT WAS STATED THAT THE CITY HAD RECEIVED A 'NUMBER Of PETITIONS
AND INDIVIDUAL REQUESTS FOR SANITARY SEWERS IN THE AREA EAST OF CHAMBERS STREET
BETWEEN LORANE HIGHWAY AND WHITBECK BOULEVARD. A MAP SHOWING THE AREAS ON WHICH
THESE REQUESTS HAD BEEN MADE WAS SHOWN, AND IT WAS EX~LAINED THAT IF SUCH AREAS
WERE PROVIDED WITH SEWERS AT THIS TIME IT WOULD FURTHER ADD TO THE PROBLEM OF
THE TYLER STREET TRUNK BETWEEN laTH AND 24TH AVENUES. THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC
WORKS ,FURTHER STATED THAT THEY HAVE BEEN CONDUCTING STUDIES ON THE SEWER LINES
THROUGH WHICH THE PETITIONED AREAS WOULD DRAIN AND WERE COMPILING THE DATA AT
THIS TIME AND WOULD REPORT ON THE STUDIES DURING THE BUDGET SESSIONS. IT WAS
RECOMMENDED THAT ALL OF THESE PETITIONS AND INDIVIDUAL REQUESTS BE, HELD UNTIL
ADEQUATE SEWERS TO CONNECT TO HAVE BEEN PROVIDED.

IT WAS MOVED BY MR. SHEARER SEOONDDD BY MRS. lAURIS THAT ITEM 9 OF THE REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE
BE APPROVED.

IN THE DISCUSSION ON THIS ITEM, A PROPERTY HOLDER IN THE AREA TO BE SERVED B~ SUCH SEWES RE-
QUESTED INFORMATION AS TO WHEN A SEWER MIGHT BE POSSIBLE. COUNCILMAN WILSON ALSO STATED HE
BELIEVES THE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT SHOULD HAVE HAD ALL INFORMATION ON THIS A NUMBER OF YEARS
AGO SO THAT THE CITY WOULD BE READY TO PROCEED ON SEWERS FOR THIS AREA, AND FURTHER STATED HE
WISHES TO SEE THIS PROGRAM P+ROGRESS AS RAPIDLY AS POSSIBLE.

MAYOR CONE STATED A RECENT ARTICLE IN fORTUNE MAGAZINE INDICATES A LARGE NUMBER Of CITIES ARE
IN TROUBLE WITH THEIR SEWER SYSTEMS. THE MAGAZINE ARTI~LE REPORTS A BACKLOG OF $44,000,000,000
IN SEWERS IN VARIOUS,CITIES IN THE UNITED ,STATES, AND THE MAYOR STATED HE DOES NOT BELIEVE PAST
STAFFS OF THE CITY CAN BE BLAMED FOR THE ~XISTING SITUATION.

IN A GENERAL DISCUSSION THERE WERE SOME WHO FELT INFORMATION HAD NOT BEEN PASSED ALONG WITH
RESPECT TO THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE SITUATION, WHILE OTHERS BELIEVED THIS INFORMATION HAD BEEN
PASSED ALONG. IT WAS RECOGNIZED ,BY SOME THAT THE ENGINEERING REPORT TAKES TIME TO DEVELOP,
AND THE MAYOR ALSO SUGGESTED THAT THE CARRYING OUT OF SUCH A PROGRAM WILL TAKE A LARGE
AMOUNT OF FUNDS AND WILL UNDOUBTEDLY REQUIRE A BONDING PROGRAM, ADDEO TAXES AND ADDEO WATER
USER CHARGES.

I

11
I
I

THERE WAS ALSO A REVIEW BY A CITIZEN OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING SEWERS INTHE VICINITY OF I.ITH
AVENUE AND ALMADEN STREET EXTENDING BACK ~ 1945. ANOTHER CITIZEN SUGGESTED THAT SINCE THE
CITY HAD DEVELOPED THE PARK-AIRE SUBDIVISION AND HAD PROVIDED THIS AREA WITH SEWERS, THE
CITY IS BEING UNFAIR TO OTHER FRINGE RESIDENTS WHO ARE REQUIRED TO CONTINUE TO BE WITHOUT
SEWERS AT THE EXPENSE OF THOSE WHO PURCHASE PROPERTY FROM THE CITY IN THE PARK-AIRE SUBIDI-
VISION. SINCE THIS SITUATION EXISTS, IT WAS STATED THAT THE CITY SHOULD MAKE EVERY EFFORT
TO ADD TO THE SEWERS SO THE FRINGE AREAS RECENTLY ANNEXED CAN BE SERVED.

A VOTE WAS THEN TAKEN ON THE MOTION TO APPROVE ITEM 9 OF THE ,COMMITTEE REPORT AND MOTION
CARRIED.

10. PETITION FOR SANITARY SEWER BETWEEN 23RD AVENUE AND 24TH AVENUE AND BETWEEN ADAMS
AND ,VANBuREN STREETS - IT WAS STATED THAT A,PETITION HAD BEEN RECEIVED fOR SANI-
TARY,SEWER IN THE AREA SOUTH OF ADAMS SCHOOL BETWEEN ADAMS STREET AND VANBUREN
STREET ON THE NORTH 'SIDE OF 24TH AVENUE. ' IT WAS FURTHER S~~TED .THAT A PORTION

e

I.,
?
I
I'

I
!
I
ri
I
f
i
I
I
II
~.
II
I
I
t
I
I
>,

i
~
,
I
f
i;I
~l
II
:1
If
II
:1
,I
~ I
r!

;

"
I
II.
II
!l
:1
;1
II
n
~l
II

i!
:1
11
I'
,I
1)
J
:1
:1
[j
~:
II
I
(

'I
"
,
,
i
,
I
!

I
I

I
\
!I
i,
H
I
tl
;,,1, ..,j
~~
