West University Task Force Final Report June 2003

On May 10, a neighborhood clean-up day was held. The day included a tree planting by
President Dave-Fwhnmayer and Mayor Sim Torrey, as well as participation from residents, the
task force members, property and business owners. The task force hopes that commllnity
involvement projects such as the neighborhood clean-up can become an annual event.

To assist in providing for better lighting in the area, staff requested funding through the
Community Development Block Grant to add thi~ecn new lighting fixtures along 14t~ Street.
The request, in the amount of $42,250, was approved and the project is scheduled to be
completed during the next fiscal year.

There has been much energy, enthusiasm, and interest in creating positive change in the West
University Neighborhood demonstrated over the course of the task force's work. Mechanisms
need to put in place to continue this work after the task force'disbands. Further, the West
University Task Force recommends that the decision makers, University of. Oregon President
Dave Frohnmayer and Eugene City Council, direct staff to further scope the short and long-term
solutions and return with proposals for implementation.
