' West University Task Force Final Report June 2003

6. Neighborhood Grants
The task force suggested that neighborhood grants, with or without a neighborhood
association, could be sought to generate funding for environmental improvements to the
neighborhood. The task force, was also interested in exploring the feasibility of re.opening
the West University neighborhood park or using grants to develop other open space in the
area. Grants may also supplement existing alcohol Prevention and education efforts.

7. Neighborhood. Clean-Up/Community Day
A neighborhood clean-up or community day was recommended to encourage community
bUilding and investment in the area from an otherwise uninvolved population of residents.
This event, planned and coordinated by task force member Sackic Reed, was held on May
l0~. The City and University are among thc organizations that supported this project.

8. Resource Contact List -
The task force sees a user-fiiendly, easily accessible list of important contacts for residents,
landlords and businesses as a cost-effective way to inform people of the available resources
and options for assistance in the community, share information on legal rights and channels
or recourse, and pwmote accountability for problem-solving. Examples of~c type of
information that could be included in the resources list includes: contacts at the City' for
nuisance complaints, trash, lighting, street sign problems, and abandoned vehicles; names
. and rol.es of neighborhood liaisons; 'homeless camping roles and restrictions, and applicable
student and police services.

· 9. Provide Educational Information with Kegs
- - The task force suggested that a pamphlet descr/bing people's rights and responsibilities as ..
they pertain to hosting a party be.made available to beer wholesale distributors. The
pamphlets could then be handed out to people when they purchase their keg, providing
another avenue for outreach and education.

10. Neighborhood Forum
This strategy was suggested as a mechanism to gauge interest in forming a neighborhood
association, and to actively engage more residents in the work of the' task force..The
neighborhood forum was hosted by the task force in February and Was a great success.
Several participants indicated interest in forming a neighborhood association.

Outcomes and Next Steps

Several other positive next steps are being pursued as offshoOts to the work of the task force. To
better.respond to the public safety concems. of residents, .thc Eugene Police Department and the
University of Oregon are planning to pwvide for a dedicated foot patrol.for the West University.
Neighborhood. Beginning August 1, an. officer will be*scheduled to' patwl the neighborhood in
the afternoons and evenings, and will be available to supplement other patrol efforts on weekend
nights. This position is being co-funded by the City and the UniVersity. ~
