<br />Bartzat dba Marty's Steak Villa, 389 West 6th Avenue, as approved by the Police De-
<br />partment.

<br />"Present: Mayor Cone; Councilmen Lauris, Chatt, Swanson, Christensen, Deverell,
<br />Crakes, and Purdy; City Manager; Administrative Assistant; City
<br />Attorney; City Recorder; Director of Public Works; and others.

<br />1. Cross on Skinners Butte - MayorCone opened the meeting by stating that
<br />he would limit the speakers, both pro 'and con; regarding the replace-
<br />ment of the Cross on Skinners Butte by Alpha Phi Omega fraternity and
<br />called for discussion by those in favor of the Cross. Speaking in favor
<br />of the replacement of the Cross on Skinners Butte were Mr. Russell
<br />Tompkins, principal of Willakenzie School; Mr. Ralph Shattuck, chairman
<br />of the committee for Alpha Phi Omega; Mr. Vance Webster, First Baptist
<br />Church; Mr. Earl Pierson; Mrs. Walton; and Mr. Ernest Duncan. Speaking
<br />against the replacement of the Cross on Skinners Butte were Rabbi Nei-
<br />man, Temple Beth Israel; Mr. Ray Lowe, 768 Ascot Drive; Mr. Ivan Niven;
<br />Mr. Val Lauren Winn; Mr. Carl Nelson; and Mr. Rudolph Behar, who also
<br />submitted a list of approximately 20 names of people opposed to the in-
<br />stallation and maintenance of the Cross, In addition, the City Manager
<br />stated he had received eight telephone calls, four in favor, and four
<br />against.

<br />Mr, Swanson moved that enough land be leased on which to erect a Cross.
<br />There was no second to the motion.
<br />
<br />Mr. Christensen moved seconded by Mr. Chatt that permission be granted
<br />to erect the Cross as outlined by the fraternity. Motion carried,
<br />Mrs. Lauris and Dr, Purdy voting no.
<br />
<br />Mrs. Lauris moved seconded by Mr. Crakes that Item 1 of the Committee report be tabled
<br />pending an opinion from the City Attorney as to legality of location of the present
<br />Cross on Skinners Butte. Motion carried, Mr. Swanson voting no.

<br />2. Crossing 1st Avenue, VanBuren to Lawrence - The City Manager stated a
<br />petition had been received bearing several hundred names asking for
<br />some solution to the traffic problem of crossing 1st Avenue between
<br />VanBuren Street to Lawrence Street, A preliminary report was filed
<br />by the Traffic Engineer in the Department of Public Wt!lrks, which re-
<br />port stated that the Department was investigating the situation; how-
<br />ever, no recommendation could be made at this time.
