Employment of Women by City - Councilwoman Beal commented that she had been de-
lighted to read that the City was throwing open traditionally male jobs to females
as the result of a study initiated by the Council.

City Manager said the report had gone to the Human Rights Comrrdssion and that
they would probably forward a memorandum to the Council in this regard.

1/5/72
File

P. Report, Incandescent Lighting on Peripheral Mall Street Loop - At the request
of Councilman Williams staff prepared a report on costs and feasibility of use
of incandescent street lighting. A memorandum was circulated to Councilmen
with the agenda.

e

Councilman Williams said he had spent considerable time looking at options
available and had found that incandescent lighting was inefficient. He was
convinced that the metal halide fixture was preferable to ei ther incandescent or
mercury vapor, and could provide illumination at a lower level. Mr.. Williams
requested that Mr. Poticha, architect, be allowed to present to councilmen some
information concerning this type lighting.

"
Mayor Andersonpointe'd out that reconsideration of this matter would require
a two-thirds vote at a regular meeting. However, he would grant the request
for a brief descriptio~ of Mr. Potieha's proposal.

I

Mr. Otto Poticha outlined a proposal using metal halide fixtures at a lower
level, using a greater number of poles. He explained the difference in cost of
installation, and how this could be balanced by costs of maintenanc e and
electricity. He distributed drawings comparing the different lighting programs,
and catalogues showing fixtures incorporating metal halide lights.

Mayor Anderson ruled that Council would withhold any questions or discussion until
a decision was made at the Council meeting whether to reconsider this matter.

)./5/72
File

Councilman Williams requested segregation of this item for discussion, saying he believes more
evidence could be placed before the Council to assure the correct decision was made and might
possibly change Council members minds as to provision of necessary lighting for the downtown area.

He moved seconded by Mr. Mohr to reconsider the decision made at the Council meeting of December 27,
1971 on lighting surrounding the mall area and that, .without additional consideration at this meet-
ing, the item be placed on a committee-of-the-whole agenda, either January 12 or 19, 1972.
