this station would be abandoned May 31, 1974. Council
the City should intervene on behalf of Mr. Paulus.
i Oil; peti tions had been circula ted', and meetings 'had been held wi th Standard Oil
D. W. Adams, Ken Simpson, and R. E. Clarke of Standard Oil Company of California
were present. Mr. Adams explained that the station being abandoned was similar
,to many in the western states discontinued because they did not have the ability
to serve present-day motorists. He said the substandard.faci1ity and low-income
performance did not contribute" to the community, the company, nor the dealer himself. I
Of many similar stations closed in the Eugene/Springfield area this was the first
ltO receive community reaction, and Mr. Adams attributed it to the type of ser~ice
provided by Mr. Paulus. The station offered Mr. Paulus at 13th and Lincoln,'h~'
said, was one which had been "mothballed," a good building, with a long lease. .
In answer to Mrs.Campbe11, he explained the. policy concerning abandoned stations
was to remove the building and tanks and level the land to a clean condition. He
said this particular site (13th and iIigh) was company-owned land and would be sold.
In answer to Councilman Keller, Mr. Adams said that if Mr. Paulus decides not to
accept the 13th and Lincoln site, the gas allocated to his station would ~e_dis-
tributed to other stations in the community. And in answer to Rick Grimshaw of
iKPNW, Mr. Adams said preparation of the station at .13th and Lincoln would be
!started immediately upon Mr. Paulus' deciding to accept it so that it would be
(ready for occupancy by May 31.
u.iGarbage Board Recommendation re: Biweekly Pickups - In response to previous Council
inquiry, the Garbage Board recommended against addin.g a biweekly rate to the present
:schedu1e of rates for garbage collection because_.(l) State regulations require re-
'mova1 of "putrescib1e" material once a week; (2) thc~ garbage haulers bel,ieve that
many customers would try to compact garbage, making cans too heavy and difficult
i to empty, to take advantage of the lower rate; and (3) the garbage haulers now
make special arrangements for customers where conditions warrant the biweekly service.,
, : Comm
! Counci1wo.man Campbell ref~rred to the recent rate increase and said many people 3/U.3/74
were disturbed because it was made retroactive to January and the higher rates for I File.
all three months were included in one statement. She~oped that in future instances
more information could be given customers to avoid misunderstanding.
