<br />e <br /> <br />Ms. Mazzie said the Extension Services serves apartment dwellers, home owners, <br />renters, young people, old people, and families. She named many programs <br />provided by the Extension Service. <br /> <br />Margret Albertus, 2963 Van, said she lives in the Willakenzie neighborhood and <br />has been a member of the Willakenzie Extension Homemakers Study Group for 25 <br />years. She said the Cooperative Extension Service is the largest adult <br />education program in the United States. She said the Extension Service helps <br />everyone who needs help. She wondered who kind of message would be sent to <br />newcomers if the City does not support the Extension Service. <br /> <br />Robert A. Wearne, 1510 Em Ray, said he is a horticulturist. He retired from <br />the Extension Service. He discussed the changes in the Extension Service in <br />the last 30 years and said more and more city dwellers are being served. He <br />said the United States Congress approved a special appropriation in 1972 to <br />develop a city gardening program. He displayed a magazine titled "Around <br />Town.1I <br /> <br />Marlene Black, 1175 Almaden, said she has been involved in 4-H programs for <br />many years. When she lost her sight, she learned that 4-H members provide <br />socialization and obedience training for guide dogs. She is now co-leader of <br />a 4-H Dog Obedience and Puppy Raising program. She said it is a worthwhile <br />program. <br /> <br />Stacy Brummett, 4937 Nort" Way, said she has been a recipient of the Energy <br />and Nutrition Program of the Extension Service and her family has benefited <br />from the program. <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />Gordon Elliott, 1414 Polk, said he has paid taxes in Eugene for over 45 years <br />and the Extension Service has provided excellent services during that time. <br />He said the Extension Service helps the needy. He said volunteers are very <br />helpful. <br /> <br />Mr. Gleason said City officials agree that the Extension Service provides a <br />good service. They would like to see the service maintained. He said the <br />recommendation against including the city in a County Service District is <br />because the same issues that face the Lane County Board of Commissioners would <br />face the directors of a County Service District. He said the commissioners <br />could provide funds from the Lane County General Fund or propose a special <br />levy or an increase in the tax base to support the Extension Service. He said <br />the pressure to add servi ces to a speci a 1 di stri ct can be great. He <br />recommended that the existing authority of Lane County be used to support the <br />Extension Service. <br /> <br />Answering questions from Mr. Rutan and Ms. Ehrman, Mr. Gleason said he will <br />find out what the total budget of the Lane County Extension Service is. He <br />said people will continue to work on adoption of a tax base for a special <br />district if it is not approved.
