Mr. Silkwood reviewed the design using many illustrations.
. Answering a question from Mr. Hansen, Mr. Silkwood said the largest regional
carrier airplanes in use here now are F27s which have 40 seats. Four could be
parked on the ramp. Security screening is not needed for airplanes with fewer
than 60 seats.
Replying to questions from Ms. Ehrman and Mayor Obie, Mr. Silkwood said all
the landscaping in the designs is new. The existing parking area accommodates
about 600 cars. The new design will accommodate about 800 cars, but it can be
expanded to accommodate 700 more cars. Mr. Shelby said consideration will be
given to landscaping both sides of the entrance road to the airport.
Responding to questions from Mr. Holmer and Ms. Ehrman, Mr. Silkwood said
there will be a peak demand for 450 people in the gate lobby where they wait
for airplanes, but the fire marshal will permit more people. The designers
have provided room for visitors in the gate lobby, but the airport management
will decide about permitting visitors there. If they are permitted, visitors
will have to go through security.
Answering a question from Mr. Miller about when luggage will be available to
passengers, Mr. Silkwood said airline personnel decide when and how luggage is
unloaded. Mr. Miller noted that the delay in recovering luggage is one of the
most serious problems at the airport now. He suggested Mr. Silkwood explore
means of ensuring swift luggage delivery in the design. He also suggested the
airport management explore means of ensuring sufficient available personnel to
unload luggage.
e Ms. Ehrman suggested the landscaped courtyard could be optional. She was
pleased with the memo the council received answering questions about the
expansion.
Responding to a question from Mr. Rutan, Mr. Silkwood said the cost of the
expansion as designed is within the $17.1 million cost discussed by the
council previously.
Several councilors commented on the designs. Ms. Schue liked them.
Ms. Bascom liked the landscaped courtyard. Ms. Wooten was pleased with the
less cluttered look of the designs. She had hoped the expansion would serve
for longer than ten years. She would like estimates of the cost of the
expansion that may be needed then.
Answering a question from Mayor Obie about finding space for a sixth airline,
Mr. Silkwood said new airlines could sublease space from other carriers or we
still have the option of another ticketing bay as a bid alternative. It
usually is no problem.
-
MINUTES--Eugene City Council September 11, 1985 Page 5
