totalitarian: one voice only and that is the official voice.~ In reality the city's workforce,
like the city itself, is made of many voices. Embracing healthy discourse, debate and
dissension is part of honoring diversity. I believe we are part of a vibrant workforce
deeply committed to providing outstanding service in whatever we do: rather than
receiving emails and trainings that make us feel as though we are doing something
wrong, let us know how well we are doing our jobs. When specific individuals within the
workforce fail to meet expectations, address those issues specifically. Beautiful new
buildings do not a "civic center" make: the heart and soul of these projects are the people
we trust to keep them running efficiently.

Dennis has impressed me as a City Manager who says he wants one thing from
employees, but who acts as though he is beholden to a different set of standards. I would
like meaningful efforts made to repair the rift between management and employees. I
would like to have the same ideals applied 'fairly to both groups.

Employee 11:

1. In what areas does the City Manager's performance meet your expectations?

I have limited knowledge of Mr. Taylor's performance, but he seems to be doing an
adequate job.

2. In what areas does the City Manager's performance exceed your expectations?

Although I don't have specific examples, Mr. Taylor appears to be an asset to the
organization and community.

3. What steps can be taken to improve the City Manager's performance?

I would like to see Mr. Taylor be more approachable from the viewpoint of the common
citizen and city employee. To be effective, a City Manager should make all citizens and
employees feel comfortable and on a par with himself or herself whenever discussing
issues or in casual conversation.

Employee 12:

1. In what areas does the City Manager's performance meet your expectations?
- Efforts to cOmmunicate are ongoing, using a variety of means.

2. In what areas does the City Manager's performance exceed your expectations?

Focus on values and ethics development, and expectations of trainings about values being
implemented by Departments.

City Manager Evaluation 7 July 2005
Employee Comments
