There is great mistrust of police and city officials among many in marginalized communities.
Diverse communities are often hidden. There must be a proactive and ongoing effort to raise the
visibility of marginalized communities and cultures.
There has been an increase in hate and bias crimes and incidents in Eugene, targeting several
marginalized communities. This may indicate a resurgence of white nationalism, which has historically
had a significant presence in Oregon.
I believe this last one is most urgent, though I see them all as related. Given the history of Oregon as a
white-only state, the long history in the United States of police forces being used as an agent of white
supremacist institutions, and high-profile police shootings of people of color across the country, we
must assure marginalized communities that the Eugene Police Department will work to protect them
from violence, no matter the source. It is incumbent upon those in power, both police and city officials,
to reach out to all communities, but especially those that have historically been marginalized, and to
understand their needs. I believe that the Human Rights Commission can use its influence to build
bridges of communication and understanding between police officials and diverse communities.
3 What do you see as the three most pressing human rights issues in Eugene? Select the most important and
explain why.
I have strong listening and conflict resolution skills, based on several communication trainings over the
years. This includes "Crucial Conversations," "Working Better Together," and other such trainings.
In WeCU, we haven't always agreed on many things. All I can do is share from my heart, address my
concerns, state my goals, relate my experiences, and above all, listen to others do the same. When we've
done this, we've always been able to reach a consensus.
4 Describe your specific strengths and weaknesses that would allow you to negotiate group situations in which
members hold strong, differing opinions. Give a specific example if possible.
Daniel Borson
HRC - Round 1 Applications July 8, 2019, Meeting – Item 4
