I have worked in higher education for over 20 years, mostly in student affairs, where equity and inclusion
are central tenets of the field's professional standards. I was often a voice of balance, integrity, and
improvement; for example, while the culture of our field tends to be liberal, assuming the moral
righteousness of our culture led us to marginalize our more conservative colleagues, which ironically is
contrary to our value of inclusion and equity.
1 How has your employment and/or volunteer experience prepared you to do the work of a Human Rights
Commissioner? Please be specific.
As a Marine combat veteran, I witnessed abusive behavior by my fellow Marines upon prisoners of war,
and I have witnessed a degree of hatred I can't understand among white supremacists and homophobes
as I grew up in the South. These experiences made indelible marks upon my identity and social
consciousness about the value of and need for greater respect for the dignity and humanity of every
person.
2 How has your personal experience prepared you to do the work of a Human Rights Commissioner? Please
be specific.
The 2 most pressing human rights issues in Eugene in my opinion are homelessness and poverty. The
third issue, I think is possibly more of a threat/risk than a bonafide issue right now, and that is how hate
and bias are increasingly impacting our communities.
3 What do you see as the three most pressing human rights issues in Eugene? Select the most important and
explain why.
First, I tend to value and engage the complexity of issues, and thus I often engage a more methodical
and analytical approach to addressing and responding to issues. I value multiple perspectives, and tend
to search for common ground among them. I appreciate a balance of diplomacy and direct
communication within dialogue to help groups understand issues from various angles, respect the
dignity and experience of others, and achieve resolutions that are balanced, practical, and sustainable.
4 Describe your specific strengths and weaknesses that would allow you to negotiate group situations in which
members hold strong, differing opinions. Give a specific example if possible.
Stan Dura
HRC - Round 1 Applications July 8, 2019, Meeting – Item 4
