Rural Patrol and Resident Deputies. <br />Add 35 staff (23 deputies, two sergeants, five <br />communications officers, one radio technician, and four record officers) as rural patrol and <br />resident deputies to respond to calls for service and to enhance law enforcement presence in <br />unincorporated areas. <br />Cost: $4,900,000 <br />Results: Increase response to priority calls for service and decrease response time. Resident <br />Deputies will provide a presence in communities, be aware of the environment, and develop <br />relationships with residents and businesses which will help prevent criminal activity and solve <br />crimes. These patrol officers and resident deputies will arrest people who commit crimes. Part <br />of a balanced public safety system. <br /> <br />Detectives for Property and Violent Crimes. <br /> Add four detectives in the criminal investigation <br />section of the Sheriff’s Office; two to focus on property crime and two on violent crimes, <br />supervised by a sergeant. <br />Cost: $800,000 <br />Results: Increase in the prosecution of property criminals and drug cases; more stolen property <br />returned to victims, increase in the arrest, prosecution, and incarceration of violent criminals. <br />Part of a balanced public safety system. <br /> <br />Assistant District Attorneys, Investigators, and Support Staff. <br /> Provide funds for additional <br />assistant district attorneys to aggressively prosecute all drug and property crimes; provide legal <br />advice to interagency drug team; institute all appropriate forfeiture proceedings as part of <br />criminal actions; prosecute all complex identity theft cases which are often part of a drug <br />scheme. Return all offenders to court when they violate probation. Add 13 staff plus one <br />additional deputy medical examiner. <br />Cost: $1,500,000 <br /> <br />Results:Prosecute all drug and property crimes (estimated to be 2000 to 2500 cases annually); <br />at least 90 percent of those charged with a drug or property crime will be convicted and <br />sentenced traditionally or offered alternative programs such as Drug Court. Part of a balanced <br />public safety system. <br /> <br />Existing Juvenile Detention Capacity. <br />Open 32 bed detention pod with central control <br />operation; add 38.2 staff. Provide appropriate treatment for youth offenders while in detention. <br />Cost: $3,600,000 <br />Results: Provide for about 700 youth admissions per year and achieve a 65% reduction in re- <br />offenses for those using detention. The additional beds would provide about 66 percent of the <br />identified need. Contributes to an overall reduction in the re-offending rate. <br /> <br />Existing Jail and Forest Work Camp Capacity. <br /> Restore 96 bed third-floor housing unit; <br />restore the Special Management Unit; add 79 beds through double bunking. Bring the Forest <br />Work Camp up to capacity by adding 25 beds. <br />Cost: $5,700,000 <br />Results: Increased ability to hold offenders longer; decrease offender’s ability to re-offend; hold <br />more sentenced offenders accountable; reduce failures to appear for court; get people into <br />treatment programs; undertake skill-building.
