-----Original Message-----
From: c elizabeth brady [mailto:greentigerll1@gmail.com]
Sent: Friday, September 30, 2005 9:29 AM
To: BJORKLUND Neil H
Subject: Goal 5 concerns

This particular Urban forest is however unique in that it is the last large parcel of virgin
land within the UGB. What really needs to happen is to take this out of our backyard (and
BTW it's not really in MY backyard!) and make it a Eugene focus. However, most issues
begin as NIMBY issues because it is the neighbors who are aware of the particulars of
their region. NIMBY in this case cannot be viewed as something negative but as
something positive. We all have the responsibility to protect and mend the world. We
cannot be everywhere. It is not physically or intellectually possible But we can be
responsible for the protection of that small space we call home. Home usually includes
our own 'backyard'. Home is what we know best. The difference between our goal and
the goal of 'nimbies' is that we are the watchkeepers for the betterment of Eugene, our
larger home. 120 highend houses will do nothing to enhance the quality of life for the rest
of Eugene. 39 acres of exquisite untouched urban forest will. A lighthouse keeper cannot
be responsible for the care of all the ships on the ocean but only those who pass by their
lighthouse. That is why along the coastline we have many lighthouses and many keepers.
We are the lighthouse keepers for the Southwest hills. Within our watch are the
ridge line, the headwaters to the east and west amazon creeks and beautiful old growth
forests with all of their supporting eco systems. What we must say to the city council and
the planning department is "Not on MY watch, will you destroy this important natural
and national resource"
We do need to bring in the larger Eugene community and make them aware of what is
happening in their backyard. Maybe we should have a booth at the Eugene Celebration
or have people dressed as Kevin's favorite bird pass out fliers at the Celebration. I am
only half kidding -guess which half.
I am planning on bringing the issue into a much wider focus. Now that Mr. GREEN (?!
shame on him for desecrating his name. It's like a bad dickens novel) has made his move
- we can begin this process. His filing makes it clear where we now stand. And believe
me if I have anything to say about it it won't be in the middle of a clear cut.
Thanks for all of your excellent and hard work,
Charlotte Brady
1488 Barber
Eugene OR 97405
