LOWE Allen D

From:
Sent:
To:
Cc:
Subject:

Shannon Sardell [ssardell@uoregon.edu]
Monday, November 07,200511 :02 AM
*Eugene Mayor and City Council
LOWE Allen D
Chambers Special Area Zone

November 7, 2005

Dear Mayor and City Councilors,

My husband and I rent a modest house in the Chambers Nodal
Development area. We enjoy the area for its pedestrian friendly
streets, diverse neighbors, and close proximity to many of Eugene's
amenities. Though we cannot afford to purchase a house in this
neighborhood presently, we do not think that arguing for an increase
in density to full R-2 standards in this area would make housing more
affordable nor preserve the diverse nature of this area of Eugene.

With my training in architecture, historic architecture, and
planning; as well as my observations and involvement in the areas
neighborhood group; it is my full belief that the majority of
residents in this neighborhood understand the need for infill and
density in the urban cores in order to protect the rural areas around
the city. They have taken a lot of time and effort to understand the
building codes, think about the codes implications, and propose
SENSIBLE solutions for the area they live in and consider home.

The residents of the Chambers area have proposed infill standards
that can be understood not only by the developers and construction
companies, but also by the common person not trained in the
construction industry. These standards are flexible and reduce the
negative impacts of infill while still allowing for an increase in
the density in this area by over 50%. Both the Planning Department
staff and the Planning Commission have recommended the approval of
these standards.

This neighborhood community has worked hard to present and preserve
the most important parts of their living environment while still
understanding the need to grow. It it both the hope of my husband and
I that we can own a home in this area in the years to come. I hope
the City Council will support the proposed standards so that we can
continue enjoying this unique and very Eugene-like neighborhood.

Thank you,
Shannon Bell
910 Taylor Street
Eugene, Or 97402

1
