"CLOSE THE LOOP" - EUGENE BICYCLE COALITION COMMENTS
NOVEMBER 14,2005

Because of the speed of the automotive traffic eastbound on River Avenue, I think that
incorporating pedestrian islands at each pedestrian cross walk would be a safety
enhancement. I strongly urge the council to consider this pedestrian safety enhancement.

I am concerned about the safety of pedestrians crossing River A venue. Striped
crosswalks will not slow traffic. Pedestrian islands would promote safety for pedestrians
and bicyclists in crossing the street and would help slow traffic. Otherwise, I support the
project.

Painted crosswalks will not slow traffic and will likely not make the crossings safer for
pedestrians. National studies indicate the crossings can be safer if the paint is enhanced.
The best way to do this is to include pedestrian refuge islands at the crossings.

I am concerned that adding the center turn lane in the eastern end would encourage faster
traffic than the earlier design (two lanes). This assumption comes from seeing the loss of
friction from oncoming traffic.

Pedestrian Islands requested

Painted cross walks are not recognized by motorized without enhancements

C:\Documents and Settings\ceexelf\LocaJ Settings\Temponuy Intemet Files\OLK67\20051114 ERe Comments. doc
