LOWE Allen 0

From:
Sent:
To:
Cc:
Subject:

Happy, Jane [JHappy@peacehealth.org}
Tuesday, November 08,2005 12:37 PM
"Eugene Mayor and City Council
LOWE Allen 0; tomhappy@aol.com
Please support Chambers Special Area Zone

November 7, 2005

Dear Mayor and City Councilors,

I'm writing in support of the proposed Chambers Special Area Zone. Creating this zone
would help protect against the destructive impacts of poorly planned infill and would
still fulfill the City'S goals of compact growth and multi-use development. r chose to
live in an older neighborhood near the city center for a variety of reasons, one of which
was for the well-loved, established feeling these neighborhoods inspire and the strong
communities of people of love and live in them. I was dismayed to learn shortly after
purchasing my home that my neighbors have the right to build 3 story multiplexes in their
back yards that massively impose upon all surrounding properties. Two of my neighbors
have since done this (come to find out that plans for these drove out the previous owners
of our home) and two more have plans to do so. Poorly planned infill development can and
does ruin previously beautiful, well-loved neighborhoods. It destroys the peace, privacy,
and aesthetic appeal for all neighbors. It is happening in my own neighborhood. Imagine
what such thoughtless infill development would do to your own home and neighborhood. I
see why people are compelled to move into "sprawl" neighborhoods that have built in
protections to avoid such blight. No developer can recreate the beautiful older
neighborhoods that are Eugene's treasure and heritage. It is so sad to me to see how much
has already been ruined by thoughtless infill. I wish Eugene had protected this heritage
from the start, but r am relieved and grateful that so many citizens have stepped forward
to do the work that the city has not done and have developed the recommendations embodied
in the Chambers Special Area Zone plan. Please support this plan, and PLEASE APPLY THESE
GUIDELINES TO ALL INFILL DEVELOPMENT THROUGHOUT THE CITY. Please do a better job of
protecting the integrity of our neighborhoods. If we do then the people who love them
will want to remain living in them and they will be preserved by strong communities for
generations to come.

Thank you,

Jane Happy
1546 Charnelton Street, Eugene, OR 97401

This message is intended solely for the use of the individual and entity to whom it is
addressed, and may contain information that is privileged, confidential, and exempt from
disclosure under applicable state and federal laws.
