Every existing and new structure <br />or building with a Graup R occupancy shall be provided with smoke <br />detectors conforming to UBC Standard 43-6 and the following: <br />1. In Group R, General Occupancies detectors shall be <br />located in accordance with approved manufacturers' instruc- <br />tions, when activated detectors shall provide an alarm in <br />the immediate area located, dwelling unit, guest/sleeping <br />room, corridors, etc, In new construction, required detectors <br />shall receive primary power from the building's electrical <br />wiring when such wiring i s served from a commercial source. <br />firing shall be permanent and without a disconnect switch <br />other than those required far over-current protection. Detec- <br />tors may be battery operated when installed in existing build- <br />ings, in buildings without commercial power, or in buildings <br />which undergo alteration, repair, etc., and when such work <br />does not involve the creation of additional units or is a <br />change of occupancy. <br />~. In Graup R, Division 1 occupancies every existing <br />dwelling unit within an apartment house, and every guest room <br />designed or used far sleeping purposes within a hotel or motel, <br />shall be equipped with an approved smoke detector, Detectors <br />within apartment dwelling units shall be mounted vn ceiling <br />or walls in each unit at a point centrally located in the <br />corridor or other area with access to the rooms used for <br />sleeping purposes. In efficiency or studio apartments and <br />within hotel and motel guest units, the detectors shall be <br />centrally located on the ceiling or wall. -Detectors inside <br />dwelling units or sleeping rooms, if a wall-mounted detector <br />is used, shall not be less than six inches or mare than I~ <br />inches from the ceiling. ~fhere dwelling units and sleeping <br />roams are on an upper level, additional detectors shall be <br />placed at an accessible location as close as practical to the <br />center of the ceiling directly above the stairways. The owner <br />of each hotel or motel, or his designee, shall inspect and <br />service each detector every 12 months. ~ record shall be <br />maintained for each detector listing the date installed, <br />dates inspected, and dates serviced, if any, This record <br />shall be available for inspection by the fire marshal, The <br />fallowing shall apply to smoke .detectors within apartment <br />house dwelling units: <br />
