or highly volatile radioactive materials are stored, a detec- <br />tion system shall be provided to detect the presence of air- <br />borne radioactivity at ar below the permissible concentrations <br />set forth in 10 CFR 20.103. Such detection equipment shall <br />be permitted tv be maintained at a l ocati on other than the <br />storage area, but shall be on the premises. <br />EXCEPTION: Airborne radioactivity detection systems are <br />not required in storage areas or buildings where storage <br />is continually limited to materials which can be demon- <br />strated to present na respiratory dangers. <br />6. Storage Conditions. <br />A. The maximum quantity and storage arrangement of <br />radioactive materials to be stored in buildings or rooms <br />designed for such purposes shall be in accordance with <br />the requirements of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission <br />and state ar local requirements. <br />B. Storage of contaminated combustible waste mater- <br />ials shall be in tightly closed noncombustible containers <br />containing no other waste. Special attention shall be <br />given to prompt disposal of combustible wastes contaminat- <br />ed with oxidizing materials that are subject to spontane- <br />ous heating. <br />fib} Exterior Storage. <br />1. General. Exterior storage of radioactive materials <br />shall be in accordance with the provisions of this subsection <br />and the general provisions specified in Section 80.301. <br />2. Distance from Storage to Exposures. <br />A. Exterior storage shall not be~permitted within 20 <br />feet of any property line, street, alley, public way or <br />exit to a public way. An unpierced two-hour fire- <br />resistive wall extending not less than 30" above and to <br />the sides of the storage area may be provided in lieu of <br />such distance. <br />B. Exterior storage shall not be permitted within 20 <br />feet of any building unless the building exterior walls <br />are not less than one-hour fire-resistive construction. <br />Storage is not permitted less than ten feet from any <br />building opening. Building openings less than 20 feet <br />from exterior storage shall be protected by afire <br />assembly having athree-fourths hour fire-resistive rat- <br />, <br />Eng. <br />3. Fire Extinguishing Systems. Exterior storage of <br />-- <br />radioactive materials shall be in fire-resistive containers <br />or shall comply with one of the following: <br />A. The storage area shall be protected by an auto- <br />matic, open head, deluge fire sprinkler system of the <br />type and density specified in UBC Standard 38-1; or <br />B. Storage shall be located under a canopy of non- <br />combustible construction, with the canopied area pro- <br />tected by an automatic fire sprinkler system. Such stor- <br />age shall not be considered to be indoor storage. <br />4. Containment. Secondary containment shall be provided <br />in accordance with the provisions of Section 80.3011}4. <br />Ordinance - 57 <br />
