18445 <br />~.i}. Section 38x8 is hereby added and shall read <br />as follows: <br />Section 388, Fire warnin S stems. <br />1. Group R, Da.yision l Occupancies. Effec- <br />tive ~'uly 1, ~.97~9, every dwelling unit within exist- <br />ing apartment hawses, and every guest room designed <br />or used for sleeping purposes within. existing hotels <br />and motels, shah. be equipped with an Underwriter <br />Labors,tory approved battery or electrically operat- <br />ed smoke detector. .Detectors within apartment dwell- <br />ing units shah. be mounted on the ceiling or wall of <br />each unit at a point centrally located in the cor- <br />e ridor or other area giving access to rooms used for <br />sleeping purposes, ~Tn efficiency or studio apart-- <br />menu, and within hotel and motel guest .units, de- <br />tectors shall be centrally located an the ceiling <br />or wall. If a wall mounted smoke detector is used, <br />it shall not be less than six inches or more than <br />twe~.v'e inches from the ceiling. The owner of each <br />hotel or motel, or his designee, shall inspect and <br />service each smoke detector every twelve ~~12~ months. <br />~ record shall be maintained for each detector list- <br />ing the date installed, dates inspected and dates <br />serviced, if any. This record shall be available <br />for inspection by the Fire Marshal. The following <br />shall apply to smoke detectors within apartment <br />house dwelling units: <br />a. The building owner ar his designee <br />shall post written instructions for the opera- <br />tion of the smoke detector within each dwell- <br />ing unit. <br />b. The tenant of each dwelling unit <br />shall be responsible for periodically testing <br />the units smoke detector. The building owner <br />or designee shall not be responsible if a ten- <br />. ant removes~a battery from a smoke detector. <br />c. Upon f aa~.ur.e of the detector, the <br />tenant shall deliver a written notice of the <br />failure to the building owner or his designee. <br />d. The ow~,er sha~.l replace or repair the <br />defective .detector within ten ~1 ~ } days from <br />the date of the notice.. <br />2. Grow ~, Division 2 Occupancies. Group <br />care facilities used for lodga,ng and supervision of <br />more than five persons who are no handicapped, and <br />whose place of residence is dictated by a respon- <br />sible government authority, shall be equipped with <br />approved smoke detectors. Such detectors shall be <br />installed in each sleeping room and in the building <br />exit system,. and shall be interconnected into the <br />building's manual fire alarm. The building owner <br />or his~~designee shall inspect and service each de- <br />. Lector every six G6~ months. A record shall be <br />maintained for each detector lasting the date in- <br />ordinance - 6 <br />
