7.2 Prescription Sedatives <br />7.2.1 Classification <br />Depressant <br />7.2.2 Common or Street Name(s) <br />Reds, Yellows, Dolls, Vals, Barbs, Downers, Ludes <br />7.2.3 Description/ Comments <br />A) Produced by pharmaceutical companies and prescribed for specific medical conditions <br />B) Drug comes in assorted capsules and tablets, many different colors, shapes, and sizes <br />C) Different classifications of sedative drugs <br />1) Barbiturates: Nembutal — Seconal — Tuinal <br />2) Tranquilizers (benzodiazepines): Librium — Valium — Xanax — Dalmane - Serax <br />7.2.4 Effects on user <br />A) Barbiturates <br />1) Range from subtle changes in mood and sedation to sleep and coma <br />2) Typical effects are reduction in attention span, less awareness, and inability to <br />perform intellectual tasks <br />3) Adverse effects <br />i. Physical: Nausea — dizziness — confusion — dermatitis — convulsions — death <br />ii. Synergistic effects when mixed with other depressants: 1+1 could = 10 <br />4) Tolerance and dependence <br />i. High physical dependence potential. Example, secobarbital dependence can <br />develop at 600 mg daily for two months or 800 mg for more than 35 days <br />ii. Psychological dependence can develop <br />iii.
