Attachment D: Text responses from consumer plastic bag ban survey
This is a no-brainer issue. The only objection that you will receive is that reusable bags can be
considered unsanitary (their was an example of an e-coli caused sickness in Oregon a couple of
months ago as a result of a reusable bag). It just needs to be made clear that reusable bags need
to be washed, especially if meat is put in them.
I believe that to ban plastic bags is a terrible idea. There are many uses for these bags, and the
city should NOT force this ban upon the public. I know many people who would never answer
this survey but hate this idea.

The retailers should provide the public with bags which are able to be recycled, and that are
clean. Please do not force this on the public! I'm a Democrat, and am vehemently opposed to
this ban.
Ban single use plastic bags. Consumers who oppose don't know how easy it is to convert. There
is no excuse for polluting our enviornment for the sake of convenience. Charging for paper bags
provided by the merchant would be a good step also.
I think plastic bags should be banned
We do almost all of our food/other shopping in Eugene. I have washed only 3-4 reusable
shopping bags once in about 4-5 years...the threat of bacteria laden shopping bags is ridiculous.
While re-useable bags are best, they are often forgotten in the car. And so paper is probably
second best and plastic (single use) the worst.
I fully support a ban on plastic bags!
recycling is so important for everything, not just plastic shopping bags. They are a nusance, lots
of garbage left everywhere. We are a throw away society. Lets take a stand, do our part to keep
this world clean.
get rid of them.
Quit telling me what to do. If you think that banning plastic bags will save the earth you are
delusional and a fool. Quit wasting time and come up with some incentives for job creators in
Eugene. This is just a WASTE OF TIME and MONEY!
I use plastic shopping bags to line waste baskets and garbage can. If they are banned, I would
have to buy plastic bags and end up with the same number of bags in the trash.
The City Council needs to focus on how to fund more jail beds and help prevent crime, not
whether they should dictate to businesses what type of grocery bags they can provide. Try an
incentive program for retailers instead of dictating and telling us all what we can and cannot do. I
don't need a "nanny".
ban plastic bags, everyone can learn to use better bags
If I can't remember to take my plastic bags for recycle, how on earth would I remember another
type of bag? I don't want to be forced to purchase these at the register, and when we accumulate
too many of these reusable bags, or they get dirty or torn and we have to throw them away, that
will create waste as well!
Because I do sometimes forget my reusable bags, it would be inconvenient at times not to have
plastic bags available. However, I support the ban 100%. I shop at Costco, where no bags are
provided, and I manage just fine!
I think the city should be focusing on the budget crisis we have, and how to provide and sustain
critical services, such as police, jails, public safety and roads rather than spending time on such a
trivial issue such as this and dictating what private businesses do. This is not a key issue for the
City of Eugene. My tax dollars hard at work I see.
There is simply no need for plastic bags. For those that repurpose them, such as pet waste there
are alternatives. Consumers must be educated on the impact of plastic bags on the environment
and be educated on alternative resources.
