Attachment D: Text responses from consumer plastic bag ban survey
I apparently treat plastic grocery bags differently from retail bags, but do use cloth-ish bags for
groceries since four or five years ago. I hope your questions, which seem to me to overlap a lot,
can maker this distinction. Thanks for your efforts.
Paper or plastic is a toss up in my opinion environmentally. Reuseable that gets reused is better
it seems. I have a need for plastic bags but I would survive their disappearance. What about a
charge on both paper and plastic?
I understand the greatest impact of plastic bags is fouling the waterways and oceans. It seems
education is a better expense than policing the population. In light of the fact we have cut funding
for drug rehab, policing, fire, public health and education what gives the city government the right
to spend time and treasure on plastic bags while the population faces hunger, crime and a lack of
child care and educational opportunities.
For my household, I don't feel there would be any net "green" benefit by banning plastic bags so I
oppose banning them. This is because I use grocery plastic bags as pet poop bags. The grocery-
size bags are large enough to pick up several loads per bag, whereas the biodegradable bags
specifically made for pet waste are only big enough for one use at a time. I'm also not convinced
their any better bured in a landfill where they may or may not biodegrade. Plus they're quite
pricey.
I am totally in favor of a ban on plastic bags
Although important to recycle items, legislating such behavior is inappropriate; education is the
more appropriate method to change citizens' behaviors involving their daily living and personal
choices.
The human race lived for a long time without plastic bags. We can get along without them.
Often, I use the retail groceries plastic bags for pet waste and garbage can liners. If there is a ban
I would have to buy plastic bags for pet waste and garbage can liners.
Have you done any studies showing the recycling rate of plastic bags in Lane county? Every time
I am at the Glenwood transfer station I see plenty of people recycling plastic bags. At the grocery
store recycling centers, the bag bins are always full. It just looks like there is plenty of recycling of
both plastic and paper. If plastic is banned, I will use paper, even if I have to pay for them.
I would expect to need to purchase replacement bags for our garbage use.
I either reuse or recycle all the plastic bags I receive. Plastic has one great advantage over paper
or cloth: it keeps moisture from leaking in or out. Without plastic bags to reuse, I would have to
buy plastic bags (for trash can liners, for example). Please do not ban plastic bags.
I am in favor of keeping things as they now are.
Ban them. the sooner the better. Don't waste taxpayer money talking endlessly about it.
People shouldn't be so lazy about recycling. Use reusable bags
People should use their own CLEAN bags - and the store personnel should NOT be required to
put their hands in to fill some of the gross (dirty, moldy, stinky) re-usable bags that are sometimes
presented.... Responsibility customers!!!!!!
I keep reusable bags in my car for grocery shopping, and almost always take them in to the store.
It is easy. The plastic bags I have from before I use as wastebasket liners.
businesses should be required to furnish bio-degradable bags....and charge consumers a nominal
price; however, do not replace plastic bags with paper bags. Trees are important resources for
carbon sequestration; let's keep our forests standing, doing this important job.
I support a ban on Plastic garbage bags
i GET THE GARBAGE PROBLEM, BUT WHAT WILL WE USE FOR LITTER AND GARBAGE
BAGS? bUY MORE PLASTIC? PAPER IS NOT SO GOOD IN OREGON...
If bags are banned we will probably just use more paper bags and try to bring our reusables more
often.
