Attachment D: Text responses from consumer plastic bag ban survey
Maybe there could be someway to encourage the generation of compostable or biodegradable
plastic bags. I say this because the only time I use the plastic ones is when I'm bringing home
meat or chicken and sometimes ice cream from the grocery store. The thought of chicken
drippings all over the rest of my groceries is really not a pleasant one. Also, we reuse them for the
waste basket in our bathroom. Personally, I think we should encourage industry to just plainly and
simply not create anything that cannot be properly recycled or composted. That would fix a lot of
things right there.

Thanks for the opportunity to speak up,

Donella-Eliz. Alston

Bethel ABC Member at Large
I'm all for the ban. Come on, Eugene, we can do this!
I'm fine with a plastic bag ban. People will squawk, but nobody likes change. It is true that I like to
use plastic bags as bin liners and doggy cleanup bags, but I can find those elsewhere, and if this
makes an impact on the environment, it is worth it.
I think it is very important we stop using plastic in any way that we can. We are messing our nest
in a way that is a horror show. An important initial step in creating a more sustainable culture is by
"banning" the bag. If Eugene is as progressive as they pretend to be, this is a no brainer.
Following the precedent set in San Francisco and Portland seems natural.
We're pretty lucky that a lot of people in Eugene think about their use of plastics and try to use
their own reusable bags. That being said, A LOT of people don't either because they don't know,
don't care, or it's too difficult. It would be great to phase them out, but also provide them (maybe
for an extra charge -5-10 cents?) for people without transportation who have to walk or bike in the
rain.
It's about time we got rid of these wasteful things!
I like using my reusable cloth bags (that I purchased from Fred Meyer), but honestly, I'm
becoming increasingly concerned about the cleanliness of this, given that some of my bags are a
couple years old and I tend to use them for several purposes, not just as grocery bags, which
might cause them to pick up more contaminants and general dirt, then they might. The Fred
Meyer bags do not wash well, as they lose their stiffness after the first washing.
It would seem that you have better things to do with your time than harassing citizens over the
use of plastic bags
Aren't there more important things the City could be doing instead of worrying about plastic bags?
Let citizens be responsible.
Shoppers should need to ask specifically for a bag, especially plastic, if they need it/did not bring
their own - much like diners needing to request water at the table in water-strapped communities.
Question 4 instructs to "check all that apply"; however, I was not allowed to check more than one
response-option. Review of the draft ordinance does not explicitly mention items sold in a retail
store such as sandwich bags. Paper bags are just as resource-intensive to produce as plastic
bags. I would like to see results of a study quantifying the prevalance of plastic bags in local
roadside litter.
I would love a ban on plastic carry out bags. I dislike it when it's the only option in a lot of retail
stores and I've forgotten my own bags.
