Attachment D: Text responses from consumer plastic bag ban survey
We've been giving serious consideration to relocating our business to either Tennessee or Texas.
Everytime I see something like this and higher taxes I ask myself why do I keep the business
here? I don't want to have to lay off any more of our employees, but it's just getting unbearable
here. As a side note, is there any scientific evidence any place that says the environment would
improve nearly as much if plastic bags were banned versus cutting the number of city employees,
other than police and fire, by say 10% and selling at least 10% of the city's vehicles? I didn't think
so. You guys are nuts down there, you know that?
I'd love to see plastic bags eliminated. Also, plastic 6-pack beverage loops that kill wildlife.
This is a wonderful idea. It's about changing habits to make a difference.
I support a true ban but many areas (including Los Angeles) have implemented bans that are only
5 cent bag fees. I don't feel this is enough to change the usage habits of the targeted population.
The cost to the consumer must be much higher or the plastic bags must be replaced completely
with reusable or even paper.
I think it would be a big message to put a ban like this into effect. Other cities have started.
Ban plastic grocery bags. It's better for the environment and people will adapt.
If Eugene passes this I will not shop in Eugene
please these types of bags are unneccesary and unwanted in our landfills, our streets , our trees
etc..... please ban these bags from use. people only use them because they are there.
Try more recycling ideas to see if the public will do a better job.
I hope there is a BAN on plastic carryout bags, but if not, SANIPAC should get with the program
and do what CA and other states do...that is to INCLUDE plastic bags and other recyclables in
those carts!
should this stupid deal pass the council, DO NOT impose a charge on paper bags. nor should the
retailers. i am perfectly fine with things as they are. we do not need to ban the bags. nor do we
need to pay for them. if you were grocery shoppers you would see how many bags are used on a
trip to the store. it would get very expensive over a years time to have to pay for bags. DO NOT
BAN THE BAGS.
I don't live in Eugene but I do all my shopping there. I use reusable bags for groceries but also
use plastic bags as well as paper. Plastic and paper bags are reused in my home and if I didn't
have them I would end up buying plastic bags for home use. I walk 5 miles on country roads
everyday and almost never see plastic bags rather cans and bottles are abundant. I support
environmental ideals but fear a ban on plastic bags is flailing at windmills and takes ones eye off
the ball. Eugene shoppers are amazing and I see more and more awareness of the problem. A
regulation would alienate those we need to sway toward higher goals.
It's time to ban plastic bags. I'll be happy to pay 5 cents for paper bags.
Extremely wasteful...
While I agree with the idea behind banning plastic bags, I don't think it should be done. The only
reason why I don't always bring my own bags, at least when I remember them, is because I need
those bags around the house, to reuse for carrying things, covering my bike seat, and most
especially for holding used cat litter and small animal bedding. They're just the right size, they're
not built for durability, and they have so many uses beyond just getting groceries home.
There are more important issues to resolve. Stop wasting time and our money.
I have family in Eugene and care deeply about the city's initiative and opportunity to be a leader
on this issue. My current residence in Newport is also considering a bag ban and I'm hopeful that
at least one of the town's that my family lives in can help be a leader in initiating a momentum to
catch up with our neighboring states on this issue. I care deeply for our rivers, oceans and the
general environmental welfare of Eugene and feel that this is a small, but fantastic step in shifting
our culture to more sustainably mindful habits.
I'm glad we're looking at doing this in Eugene. Hope it passes. May testify, depending on when
meeting is.
