Attachment D: Text responses from consumer plastic bag ban survey
I say ban them. I can deal with the consequences.
I don't get the difference between using plastic from the retailer and me having to buy plastic bags
for the same use - mostly waste disposal.
It should be up to the business to decide if they want to offer plastic, paper, reusable, all, or none.
What gives government the right to make business decisions for private business. The city
doesn't have the money to start up another feel good project and this is why they don't have
enough money for current programs.
I really really hope that this comes into effect. Single use plastic bags are so unnecessary and
horrible for the environment. Also consider requiring all housing developments to host recycling
locations on site. It is really sad that most greek housing on campus and rental units aren't
required to provide this. Time to get with the times! Thanks all:)
We need to carry our groceries home in these since we usually walk to the store. We can carrie
lots more in plastic than paper. They are stronger. And we use them to follow our dog around to
pick up after her. My neighbor has even come over asking for spare plastic grocery bags when
she runs out. Getting rid of these is crazy! Don't do it. We don't want to have to shop in
Springfield grocery store.
If you ban the bags, people will quickly get use to bringing their own. Especially if they have to
pay for bags.
Re using plastic bags is a real plus.
Stop providing plastic or paper. Shoppers will easily adapt.
Thanks for conducting this survey! In addition to the plastic bags in landfill problem, they are
made from petroleum-based products, which are non-renewable and very energy intensive.
a bag ban is a great step to take: small, in the larger scheme of things, but effective. and one
would think it might be cheap, as well. it has my full support.
Rather than ban the bags, impose a $1 tax on them - that will cut down on their use, but it allows
the consumer the choice if they happened to forget to bring their own.
I own several re-usable bags, but I usually forget to bring them with me. I always wind up using
the single use plastic bags, and I hate it. I think reusable bags should be offered by stores for a
deposit, like milk jugs sometimes are. Then if you forget to bring them, you can pay a small
deposit on them, and get it back when you remember to bring a bunch in.

Single use bags are terrible for the environment, bad for wildlife, and a nuisance to recycle. They
either need to be recycled more effectively (curbside) and efficiently, or to be phased out entirely
in favor of re-usable bags.
We prefer no to receive plastic bags at retail stores.
It would be nice if more grocery stores offered paper bags over plastic (Safeway & Albertsons).
What about requiring "plastic" type bags made of biodegradable material (corn gluten I think)? As
incentive, retailers who provide them would not have to accept recycled bags.
I don't think it is a big deal to bring cloth reusable bags into stores. Frankly I think way too many
people also use too many produce plastic bags - you don't need to put 2 apples in a plastic bag -
more public awareness in stores would be good. There are times however if I forget my bag or
buy something/or too much that won't fit into my bag I need some sort of option. Also if something
is susceptible to water damage needs a bag- it rains a lot in Eugene
Just do it! Quit wasting time and pass the ordinance.
I don't want someones urine stained reuseable bag on the counter with my food. People are pigs
and will bring disease to the store.
I WANT TO HAVE A CHOICE TO EITHER USE RETAILS PLASTIC BAGS........IF PEOPLE
WANT TO USE THEIR OWN THEN GOOD FOR THEM!! DON'T TAKE MY CHOICE AWAY---I
AM A TAX PAYER WHO SHOULD HAVE RIGHTS
