Attachment D: Text responses from consumer plastic bag ban survey
While I admit to using "single-use bags" on occasion, I would like to see a ban; I work in a retail
grocery store and the vast majority of plastic bags people request are NOT necessary. The
reasons I hear for people wanting a plastic bag (for a single can of pop, or a bagel, or something
that would travel just as well in paper or in a bare hand) are that they use them for garbage (are
required by their landlord to use plastic for garbage); they are reused for cat or dog waste; that
they "have a handle"; and that the customer forgot their reusable bag. I think either charging a
deposit on a bag, banning them, or charging for them would help decrease the really wasteful
use.

I wish something could be done about bulk and produce plastic bags, too.
It would be tremendous if much of current plastic litter could be curbed, since it so easily blows
into waterways and ends up in the ocean -- to be eaten by unwary wildlife that die from it.
As a coastal state, it is imperative that we provide an example of how to drastically reduce marine
pollution by banning plastic bags.
I don't support a bag ban - I am sick and tired of new legislation for every problem - just help to
educate people.
reusing your own bags is good, reusing someone elses is VERY BAD
Why are you even waffling about banning plastic bags? Get 'er done now!
I believe that if all retailers stopped providing plastic bags people would bring their own and we
could make huge improvements in the economy and the environment.
One trip to Baja California or Mexico and you'll never use a plastic bag again. They are literally
stuck on every fence post, tree branch, bench, you get the idea. They never go away.
i am in favor of ban
if i can not use plastic gro bags i will have to buy them for garbage
Clear plastic produce bags are more re-useful as at the dog park for picking up waste and along
streets for picking up trash. Please do a public education reminder campaign that Oregonians Do
Not Litter! Thanks for doing this survey.
Ban them
I'm not sure what I would do without receiving the plastic bags from retail/grocery stores because I
reuse them around the house in so many ways.
jjjj
If stores go only to paper bags, they cost more and their costs will be passed on to consumers.
Things are expensive enough as it is without adding more unnecessary financial burdens.
I think the plastic bags should be banned. If I had no other choice, I would always have to
remember to bring my own cloth bags. The reusable bags should be washable so there is not a
possibility of food contamination. Also paper bags are wasteful and we should not simply be
using those instead of the plastic bags.
This proposal makes since, please stopthe use of plastic bags, they do harm to animals and the
environment...it's a no-brainer!
Since the city wants to raise taxes, money could be better spent on necessities rather than new
logos and surveys. Plastic bags should be at the bottom of the list for Eugene expenditures.
I would not be sorry to see plastic bags go away
Reuseable bags are difficult and time-consuming for the store employees to use. Generally
noticed that it takes 3-4 times longer to fill w/groceries. Resueable bags also are subject to
bacteria from previous uses. We put plastic bags to good use and do not contaminate the
environment with them.
I hate the plastic bags. I try to re-use them as waste basket liners, etc. but they are so flimsy they
don't work well. They also don't hold that many groceries. As far as I know Sanipac won't take
them.
