Attachment D: Text responses from consumer plastic bag ban survey
I know that we pride ourselves on doing the right thing here in Eugene, but there are far bigger
issues that we should be devoting our precious time and attention to. And, while I often prefer
paper for a number of items I shop for, there are times when a plastic bag is more sanitary, more
secure, and has found it's way into additional reusage venues than the students from the UofO
that brought this measure to council realize. While it is true that students are at a point in their
lives where they typically throw most things away, most of us that have set up permanent
residence within our community, have found meaningful usages for any number of potential waste
streams including plastic bags. In terms of volume of waste generated that could potentially be
diverted, one would need to look no further than the dumpsters surrounding the UofO for really
meaningful cubic feet of waste materials.
I
I think getting rid of single use plastic bags is a great idea!
I am in favor of a one-time plastic bag use ban in Eugene.
I suspect what's needed is decomposable plastic bags. That technology exists and could be
applied to any dry use plastic bag not just grocery.
I have been in many places with bag bans including the state of South Australia and it works. With
a low cost option for bagging if you forget your bag, there is little issue.
I would rather pay a fee than not have the option of using the bags. I do prefer paper bags so if
they were available rather than the plastic I would also be OK with that.
I use the disposable plastic bags in many different ways. Dirty nylons, clean nylons, small items
when traveling etc. I have many uses for the bags and would hate to see them banned.
Please do not ban the use of plastic bags. I reuse them for multiple purposes and prefer to use
them for raw meat purchased at the store (reusable bags can get bacteria build-up etc).
Given limited resources, I don't beleive this is something the City of Eugene shound spend limited
public resources pursuing.
I support the proposed ban on single use plastic bags.
Banning single use plastic bags is a good idea.
Do shop at Valley River and Oakway Malls
Once again my freedom is being trounced on by this city in taking away my choice!! Don't need
any more laws. If thats all you do is think up laws and taxes you are over paid and should be
removed or rethink your position.
Our anthropocentrism drives us to continue to produce the most vile trash ever imposed upon this
and future generations of living beings on this planet. Time capsule? Who needs one? The
legacy of this generation will live on for thousands of years in the trash, much of it non-
biodegradable, that we leave behind. Why is it even a question, except for pressure from the
odious plastics industry, whether we should continue to produce products made from oil?
Should vote to ban them or at least put a heavy deposit on them so people will bring them back.
ID LOVE TO SEE THEM BANNED.
If a fee is charged for the bags, some portion of the fee should be dedicated to environmental
purposes.
Please put a ban on single-use plastic bags in as many different kinds of stores as possible, and
somehow encourage replacement of plastic bagging, and wrapping of products, with cellophane
where practicable. Cellophane deteriorates; plastic has a huge half-life, and most of it ends up in
swelling landfills, or in the oceans where it really never dies, just breaks into smaller and smaller
pieces,-- to continue to do untold damage to many many other species.

Thank you for taking the initiative and opening discussion on this ignorant use of technology.
I think we need to prevent as many bags as possible from being thrown away. A ban on single-
use carry-out bags sounds like a very good idea. I almost never get these bags and I also don't
use plastic produce bags.
