Attachment D: Text responses from consumer plastic bag ban survey
I like paper bags for reusing, and when I forget my own bag I request paper.
I think initially a ban on plastic bags would be surprising to some people but they will get used to
it. Please do it. It is an easy fix to a huge environmental problem.
Banning the plastic bags may be a challenge for some consumers/retailers at first, but it's really
the responsible/right thing to do for our collective future. Please have courage.
There's no excuse for people not to use cloth bags. Start charging extra for plastic and see if this
helps.
I believe that single use bags are a key source of litter and a waste of precious petroleum to make
them.
We strongly oppose banning these bags. We reuse them a lot. It is better to have more options
for people - if you are so concerned about these bags, provide more places to recycle them and
also provide more education to the public that they are recyclable.
I don't think the government needs to tell all of us what to carry our groceries home in. How much
room could these possibly take up in the landfill? They are very thin! If I don't have these to use,
then I will need to buy thicker bags for what I am reusing these for and these will still go into the
landfill.
I don't think city government should dictate what kind of bags retailers can use. Instead of
banning plastic bags, incentivize recycling. I think Oregonians, and Eugene community
remembers have proven that they are interested in reuse and recycling. Such a ban may be
useful in other cities, but I think Eugene residents have proven that they are very efficient in this
regard.
If you ban the single use bags, That means more paper bags and more consumer garbage bags
purchased and perhaps reusable bags. All of them have a more detrimental effect on the
environment than the plastic 'single use' bags. In my view it is a stupid move. Typical of
government. Provide recycling options not bans.
I hope the counsel bans the use of plastic bags. We all need to be more responsible when using
resources unwisely. I do not agree that we need these bags for people to use when picking up
after their pets-they should buy their own bags.

thanks for "listening".
I will be forced to buy single use bags if they are banned, because I definately put them to good
use. Never litter, so I don't know how my bags could end up in the ocean.
We don't have a dog, but I wonder what people with dogs will use to pick up after them. Does
someone make bio-degradeable doggy poop bags? And can this be advertised more widely
and/or provided by the city?
Given the extensively studied and documented environmental damage done by plastic trash, why
is banning these bags even an issue?
Thank you for caring about recycling because I am very concerned about increasing population
and plastic decimation of our planet.
Plastic bags are wonderful. All you need to do is educate people about the reuse and recycling of
them and provide places at all places they are used to recycle them. Why in the world would you
want to outlaw something so cheap, convenient and easy to use. I reuse mine over and over. It
has been proven that the heavier cloth bags can harbor germs and you will NEVER get everyone
to use them. Let's use our heads for once Eugene and not bury something that is not dead. Can
we just listen to the people for once. There is a lot to be said for convenience and what is best for
the people!!!
I am 100% supportive of reducing and even eliminating the the use of single-use plastic bags. I
also feel that stores should charge the customer between 1 cent and a nickel per bag, and that
this money should be applied to developing and supporting an effective recycling system and
education about environmental issues and pollution reduction.
