City of Eugene City Hall Complex Master Plan
Community Forum #1-Questionnaire Responses

. Too close proximity to police.
. It feels oppressive due to police presence.
. I don't like the movement to replace it-money is "short" and already misallocated, e.g.
Whole Foods parking lot subsidy.
. It is set up in a way that City Council is our government with City Council chambers
being right in the center. I also like the water with the ducks that live there.
. Energy is wasteful, fairly inaccessible, architecture is not inspiring, and there are poor
working conditions for staff.
. Just needs to be seismically retrofitted-move all police to neighborhood precincts (in
fire stations)?
. It's ugly.
. It has no "presence."
. It's paid for.
. It has nice Council chamber and outdoor space.
. It's downtown, without taking up much space.
. Like its external appearance.
. Concerned about the seismic problem.
. I like the statement it makes about the relationship between the people and the
government.
. Inviting architectural space with the round Council Chamber.
. Landscaping-I would change the design to be more native but. . . the Sister Cities are
represented there.
. Good idea, but outdated and ugly.
. Lots of wasted space.
. Accessibility is poor.
. I like the late art deco nature of it.
. It's a fortress. The open space is totally uninviting. Accessibility is uninviting, it is
sprawling, it's energy inefficient, i.e. There's not much I like.
. I like the location. I like the City Council chambers.
. I do not like the lack of interaction between the streetscape and the interior space of the
building.
. Don't like water feature and wasted space in the layout.
. Inefficient (i.e. office space, energy, and building layout). Structurally unsound (roof
leaks, poor ventilation, poor lighting, and poor heating).
. Hard to find things-better signage and design.
. Bathrooms are locked-against public.
. Like fountains and open courtyard.
. Needs upgrading.
. Needs to be energy efficient.
. I was not aware that it was City Hall until someone told me. It seems like a fortress-you
have to go inside the outer walls to get anywhere.
. I like the open feeling, how spaces flow smoothly into another.
. It doesn't meet any of my needs.

The JD White Company, Inc.

Page 3

April 2006
