So something needs to be done, immediately,
especially as the neighborhood there has grown so. More children will surely drown if nothing is done.

But the reason I came to the mtg was to request some garbage containers be placed in the park, and
request that a bridge be built across the Beltline drainage ditch so the entire 46 acres can be accessed
without having to wade across a 15 ft ditch. 1 am grateful to hear a bridge will be built this summer
(altho the Parks Planning & Develpmt web site sure doesn't mention it).

But about the NE pond where all the kids have drowned. Better signage would help tremendously. The
current" 16 ft depth" sign doesn't begin to tell how difficult it would be to escape a vertically sided pit
filled with entangling water weeds. That apparently is the essence of the problem.
Two crosses have been erected by the parents of the most recent victims. If five crosses were visible I
should think that would give anyone pause from jumping in. Also a sign with a swimmer circled with a
diagonal line thru the figure, right near the crosses. A few exclamation points on no-swimming sign. I'm
glad 1 never threw sticks in there for my dog to fetch.

The neighborhood mtg emphasized how schools should alert their students regarding how dangerous the
ponds are, but unless the info is repeated every single year indefinitely this education would be short-
lived. Better signage would better educate more people. Perhaps a solar-powered phone connected to
911, like on 1-5 freeway.

I go to Golden Gardens park because it's a great dog park as well as nature walk. 1 would like to pick up
garbage while I'm there. But there's nowhere to put it. And it's a long walk back to any carpark area if I
were to fill a bag or two & drag it back. My most recent trip there I did see a lined garbage can
(someone is paying attention?) but it was at the extreme north end of park, far from a public street (and

(0

4/14/2006
