One plays club soccer and the other plays recreational soccer. I have experienced this
sport and most of the others as a parent and coach and I must tell you that I am truly embarrassed by the status
of playing fields in the City. Competition for fields is extremely high and having one organization coordinating the
effort makes sense to me. However, the coordinating organization should not have a stake in the outcome as I
feel that Kidsports has taken care of themselves with little appreciation for clubs. A significant problem that they
have is a lack of available fields and the maintenance of the fields.

The number of fields in this community is extremely low, given the demand. High schools are rarely available and
the fields at Middle and Elementary schools are very poorly maintained (if at all). There have been times that I
gave up playing on a field because of its condition and found other, private, locations. For a city that claims to be
involved in their youth, we should all be embarrassed. The school districts do not help, and I understand they are
an impediment to good maintenance because of their rules and they have not been helpful in working with
parenUcoaches (unless, of course, you would like to do your own maintenance).

There has to be a recognition that we live in rain country and grass fields will have limited use. There is a serious
need for turf fields that are available. The only non-school turf fields that I'm aware of are in Springfield (of
course, this gets into a whole other discussion).

Please invest in the parks infrastructure for people who want to do something with parks and facilities other than
walk their dog and lay on the grass. That is one use, but the recreational users are suffering.

Chuck Tilby
Resident of Eugene for 28 years

4/14/2006
