A. Peters property at 2267 Olive Street was read. A bill from the Chase Plumbing <br />(~:l Company in the amount of $21.75 was attached and the letter requested that Mr. <br />Peters be reimbursed the amount of this bill. This matter was referred to the <br />Sewer Committee to report back at the next meeting. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />A letter from the Southern Pacific Company signed by kr. ~. L. Jennings in regard <br />to logging and pole trucks being required to stop at all railroad corssings ~as <br />12 read. This matter was referred to the Judiciary COnlnlittee and the City Attorney <br />to report back at the next Council meeting. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />A letter from the State Fire Marshall regarding the recent convention at Baker was <br />13 read and ordered placed on file. <br /> <br />Councilman Bond at this time stated that he had had a complaint from property <br />owners at the N. Vi. corners of 7th and Blair St. about damage to a tree in the <br />parking being caused by pole trucks Inaking the turn at that intersection. He said <br />14 that the police had investigated that matter and found out who had caused the damage <br />and that they were going to straighten up the tree and paint it and if necessary <br />later on would put in a new tree to take its place. He said that after that the <br />vvalk at the corner had been damaged by some truck and that the Police Department <br />was checking on that matter and he thought that they VJould be able to make a report <br />in a Gay or two. <br /> <br />A letter on Treasury Department letterhead signed by the Oregon ~ar Saving Staff, <br />U. S. National Bank Bldg., Portland, was read. This Vias in re~ard to Payroll <br />deductions for War Savings stamps and bonds and.asking for 100% cooperation for <br />an overage deduction of not less than 10% of the employee's payroll. Mayor Large <br />15 suggested that he thought more of the City Employee's should be buying bonds <br />through payroll deductions and suggested that it might be wise for the heads of. <br />the departments to take this matter up vvi th the various employees. Councilman <br />Hawn explained that he thought it probably would be wise for the City Employees <br />to cooperate further in this effort as if it was not a success there w~uld probably <br />be a 10% compulsory deduction from their payroll for War Fonds or it was possible <br />this 10% reduction might be a tax and not for bonds. After some discussion by the <br />Council a motion by Farrington and seconded by Bond was made and carried that the <br />heads of the departments contact the various employees with regard to making <br />payroll deductions for War Bonds. <br /> <br />A request from the Eugene Wa tel' Board that .B. M. Sutherland and. Victor A. Rutherford <br />16 be deputized as watchmen 1'01' the Reservoirs was requested. A motion was made, <br />seconded, and carried that this request be granted on condition that these names <br />be ok'd by the Chief of Police. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />At.this time, Mayor Large appointed Fred M. O'Sullivan and P. M. Sargent as <br />employees.of the Fire Department. He stated that Mr. O'Sullivan had been working <br />since Ilf.ay 17th and Sargent since May 23rd. He said this appointment l/:as necessary <br />17 for 1IIJr. 0' Sullivan to fill the place vacated by Middlesworth, and Sargent to take <br />the place of lvjr. Knotts. On motion made and seconded,. and carried these appoint- <br />ments were confirmed and the names ordered palced on the monthly payroll. <br /> <br />At this time, the bills presented for the Casualty Station were brought up. There <br />was one bill from Alstock, Fay & Company in the amount of $115.21 and another in <br />the amount of $52.00 from the same firm and also a bill of $51.46 from the Puritan <br />Drug Company. These bills have been incurred by Dr. Thompson and amounted to <br />18 $218.67. Councilman Hawn stated that Mr. Hichens had told him that the total <br />amount of this Casualty Station?, inclusing a case to carry them in v,ould probably <br />be in the neighborhood of from 1260.00 to $275.00. There was some discussion <br />r;egarding the payment of these bills and Councilman Bond and Hawn both stated they <br />thought the bills should be OK'd by Mr. Shumaker. A motion was made by Mr. Hawn <br />and seconded by Barette that these bills be allowed after they have been ok'd by <br />Mr. Shwnaker and the other bills to complete the Station be paid not to exceed <br />the sum of $275.00 total and this money to come out of the $2,000.00 amount that <br />had been placed in the 1942-1943 budget for the O.C.D. On Roll Call all councilmen <br />present voting aye, absent Stewart and Brownson. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />On recommendation of chairman Farrington of the Finance Committee the Recorder <br />19 was instructed to pay the taxes on Lot 5, B~.6ck 5, Croners Addition for which the <br />county had received an offer and had served notice on the City by sending a <br />registered letter. <br /> <br />I" <br /> <br />A request from Russell Brothers Circus signed by J. C. Rhodes asking for permission <br />to show at the Fairgrounds July the first, inside of the racetrack. The request <br />stated that there would be two performances, one in the afternoon and one in the <br />evening. The Recorder explained that they had stated that there w~ld be about 32 <br />20 trucks mostly with trailers and they understood the license would be $100.00 and <br />they would have to put up a deposit to guarantee the cleaning of the grounds. <br />Councilman Bond suggested that owing to conditions maybe the Council should not gran <br />this permission feeling that maybe the money spent at the circus should go into <br /> <br />~ <br />
