Building accommodates fleet vehicles. East side of downtown needs some
parking. Planning incorporates 25 years of future growth space so maybe
some could be used for public parking now.
Hanging garden example is beautiful, I love them, gorgeous.
They are flexible; you can take them up and down.
I agree that we already have Wayne Morse Plaza, but wonder if we need some
open space. I want to be attracted to the surroundings and go there for more
than just paying parking tickets.
Architecture doesn’t have to supply all aesthetics. Art, sculpture, walls can also
make it Eugene. Wigwam is very NW, but could also be satisfied by local
sculpture.
Arts – important. Building also needs to be inspiring to the people that work
there, not just people that go there.
Maximize natural light. Sustainability. Energy efficiency.
Vancouver, B.C. library incorporates exterior overhang. Pass-through, elegant
use of space.
It’s urban with a small plaza.
Water feature. Not a tank. In Seattle, columnar basalt fountain – wonderful
place to escape.
What will hanging gardens look like in winter? Building should also make people
interested in what is going on in City Hall.
Original design incorporated things we are talking about. Roof top garden is
great. Europe is utilizing it; U.S. is lagging.
Input on Entry Way
I like the Vancouver, B.C. library, but don’t like that it is right up against the
street. An open space is important to draw me in.
There is lots of emphasis on one side. Hult is one-sided. Make sure to soften
other side if there is a budget issue.
The drum thing (placeholder for council chamber) in main entrance is ideal.
th
Come in right off 8, then can see where you want to go. What does it look like
coming in from other streets? At current City Hall you have no clue where you
th
are going. Need to address from other streets. I come in off 7. What will that
be like? Need to widen other entries.
