If services that are utilized everyday are located in front, what will be inside?
Patrol will not be in. Not sure about courts because may be able to use
federal courts across the street as a potential to lower costs
Do police need to be near court because they use it every day?
Patrol does not use courts everyday. Detectives will be close to courts.
Why create a separate building for the council?
To create an iconic form and a central gathering space. Council chamber
does not have to be separate.
Has council decided on a modern international design? Is sustainability more
important than style?
No discussions with council about style. Needs to resonate with the people.
We do want a building that cleans water, utilizes brown water, and
photovoltaic cells and we will be dealing with some cost limits
Regarding lay-out, point of entry SW corner; building rises up on NE corner.
th
Worried when you’re walking down 7, it will be a dark wet canyon in winter.
We intend to deal with this by stepping the building back at the west end of
the tower. The tall bar on the north side of the site maximizes both south and
east daylight which will reduce energy costs and create a nicer work
environment.
Can you consider a void or two in that north bank of the building?
Yes, we are considering cut outs to reach more light
Design is part of sustainability. Current City Hall won an award when it was built,
but many feel it is very ugly now. We need a safe design that will last 100 years.
What about the ugly factor?
We will try very hard to not let that happen.
Input on Materials
I like the combination of natural and modern. Fits Eugene. Natural, but we are
growing, forward thinking. Combine with green space.
I agree. Wood is beautiful.
Include wood component. City is noted for forests. Examples: Hult Center,
Valley River Inn. Glass to see outside. We are outdoor people. Stress wood and
outside, warmness of wood.
Aesthetics are difficult to analyze. But also need to think of practicality, efficiency,
sustainability. For example, concrete creates mass. Need to think beyond
aesthetics to include efficiency.
