Very good point. People may react negatively to the idea of concrete, but can
be used as part of an overall palate. Very sustainable.
Concrete can be made to look warm. Wood, so straight; has a hard look.
Federal Courthouse used industrial materials. Don’t seem to last, unlike the
Coliseum in Rome.
Sound and accessibility are affected by materials. Big glass open space is
difficult because of echoes. Can be moderated by wall hangings. Sight, hearing,
mobility affected by materials and shapes of materials.
We are trying to learn as much as we can about that.
I vote for more natural materials. Passive solar, stone, glass, water features. Would allow
for lesser expense.
Like the Vancouver Library. Looks back on tradition, utilizes glass, and has
modern feel. Also offers room for interior gardens, photovoltaic cells; more
accessible than square shape.
Circular lobby – provides space that activity can happen. Balance, curves, round
flowing. View from all around. Useful public space. But as a practical matter,
difficult to use space for office work that goes on in city hall.
