420 <br />o~ STQRAGE OF CLASS 11 LIQUIDS. <br />No container containing Class 11 liquids, of over five gallons capacity <br />ma.y be used to fill other containers and appliances unless outside the building or in ?. s <br />room in accordance with Section X15, and all drawing, except from safety cans, shall, <br />where the nature of the liquid permits, be as provided for in Section QSI and 982. <br />At service stations the dispensing of alcohol and other flam.~able anti-freeze <br />solutions from drums shall be done outside the building, using pump of gravity discharge. <br />Air pressure discharge shall not be used. <br />918. EXPOSED 1AINDO~,FTS MUST NAVE 4dIRED GLASS. <br />Any building, other than a frame building, within the limits given in Section <br />951, containing more than 50Q gallons of flammable liquids-in other than sealed contain- <br />ers.,. shall have all windows in side and rear walls and above the first floor on street <br />fronts, exposed by other buildings within fifty feet, provided with vrired glass in <br />metallic sash and frame. <br />of NE~rI MANNFACTURING PLANTS, <br />Any manufacturing plant established after date of enactment of ordinance i.n a <br />building in which persons are employed above the second story, shall have all rooms, <br />in vrhich Class I and~Il liquids a,re mixed or stored in receptacles permitting the es- <br />cape of vapor, constructed in accordance vrith Section Q15. <br />920• EXISTING ~•~IANUFACTURING PLANTS. <br />In existing manufacturing plants vrhere persons are employed above the second <br />floor, all elevator, stair and other yells or vertical openings communicating to rooms <br />in vrhich Class I, and II liquids are mixed or stored in receptacles permitting escape <br />of vapor, shall be enclosed and provided with self-closing fire. doors or trap doors with <br />heat releasing devices arranged to close doors automatically in case of fire. <br />921. MANUFACTURING PLANTS PROHIBITED IN BUILDINGS OCCUPIED AS DS~IELLINGS. <br />No manufacturing plant shall be located in any building used as a duelling for <br />more than one family unless all Class I lieuids are kept in safety cans, not exceeding <br />one quart in capacity, or in outside storage tanks as given in Section 951, vrith no <br />discharge inside the building. <br />121. FETTLES, VATS, ETC. <br />Kettles, vats, saturators and other vessels used in manufacturing ~orocesses, and <br />containing more than five gallons of flammable liquids, shall not be located within <br />five feet of combustible material nor vrithin five feet of any exit, unless tyro or more <br />exits are provided, and all combustible floor thereunder within a radius of ten feet <br />shall be protected ~•rith noncombustible coverings. All kettles and other open vessels <br />shall be~provided with substantial covers arranged to close automatically in case of <br />fire or which c?,n be easily a.nd readily placed in position, or shall be provided with <br />an adequate automatic extinguishing device. <br />X23. VENTILATION. <br />Rooms in which Class I and II liquids are used in open vats, pans or other vessels, <br />or in which Class I, II and III liquids are heated or otherwise treated in such manner <br />as to produce flammable vapor, shall be well ventilated. S~lhere natural ventilation is <br />not sufficient the Chief of the Bureau of Fire Prevention may require forced ventilation <br />with a vent opening of at least 20 square inches in the wall at the floor level near <br />each open receptacle containing such liquids, or each heating device from T,~hich vapors <br />may escape and opposite to any door or other air inlet. Such openings shall be covered <br />vrith 2 x 2 mesh No. 16 galvanized vrire vreb and shall be kept clear of all obstructions. <br />From each vent opening a flue, of at least 20 square inches area and of non-combustible <br />materials, built into the vaall or floor or securely fastened thereto and so arranged <br />as not to be subject to mechanical injury, shall conduct to ?.nd through a sparkless <br />eshaust fan, to be run continuously, and vrhich shall be of sufficient size to change the <br />air in the room completely every five minutes. All discharge outlets of vent pipes <br />shall be provided +:~ith 12 x 12 mesh or equivalent non-corrodible vrire screen and. shall <br />be so located. that they ~A+ill not expose surrounding property and shall be acceptable to <br />the Chief of the Bureau of Fire Prevention. Any other equivalent system of ventilation <br />may be used when approved by the Chief of the Bureau of Fire Prevention. <br />124.
