The space between the tank and the <br />enclosure ,shal_1 be completely filled with sand. or tr~ell tamped earth up to the top of the <br />enclosure. The top of the enclosure shall. be cf reinforce@ concrete at least 5 inches <br />thick or. of equivalent construction, except ?•~here the floor or other construction imm- <br />ediately above the tank is of fire-resistive construction and capable of safely ?aithstandinf <br />a. load of 150 pounds per square foot. <br />Instead. of an enclosure as above described, the tank may be encased in reinforced <br />concrete not less than ~ inches in thickness, applied directly to the tank so as to~ecm- <br />pletely eliminate any air space. <br />971 PIPING AATD OTT-~I? The <br />l_o~,~er end of the vent pipe shall not extend through the top iri to the tank for a. dist~.nce <br />of more than one inch. <br />Vent ope`~nings, except those on underground fuel oil tanks, aha.ll be provided <br />?erith approved flame arrestors. Vent openings and vent pipes shall be of sufficient size <br />to prevent abnormal pressure in the tank during filling and. except automa,tica.lly operated <br />vents, shall be not smaller than 1~-inch pipe size. Arrestors sha.1.1 be accessible for <br />examination a,nd. repair. Vent pipes sha1.1 be provided =with ~r~eather proof hoods and. <br />terminate outside of buildir._g net less than tv~o feet, measured horizontally and ver.tica.lly, <br />from any ~~~indc~r+ or. other building opening. If tight connection is made in filling .line <br />and fii.ling is by gravity, the vent pipe shall extend to a point a.t least one foot above <br />the level of the top of the gighest reservoir from which the tank may be filled, otherwise <br />it shall_ be not leas than 12 feet above the top of. the fill pipe. Where a poi,±er pump is <br />used. in filling storage tanks and a. tight connection ~s made to the fi1.l pipe, the vent <br />shall be not smaller than the fi1_1 pipe. <br />The vent pipe from two or more t?.nks may be connected to one upright ?•rith the <br />connection not less than one foot above the level of the top of the highest reservoir from <br />tr~hich the tanks may be filled. <br />VALVE IA DR4~}iING=OFF PIPES. ' <br />All d.r~!rring-off pipes terminating inside of any building shall have valves a.t <br />the discharge end; ashen delivery is by gravity, there shall be a second valve located <br />a.t a. suitable point in the lire for use in an emergency. <br />~. VALVE NEAR TANK IF ABOVE GROUND <br />Where tanks are above gro?~r_d there shall be a valve located near the tank in <br />each pipe.
