<br />Working together phrase - common sense of what that means. <br /> <br />Before moving on - I was in Italy. Experienced different cultures. Europe spoke to other <br />cultures. Connected - different languages and races. Don’t speak Italian. Basics - <br />educations and experiences. <br /> <br />Tough question - government. City of Eugene. When there are crisis - need to <br />understand when people are coming from before issues arise. Civic infrastructure - know <br />each other in human way. People comfortable talking with others especially regarding <br />difficult subjects. As people of color in this town we have more responsibilities. <br /> <br />Why people leave Eugene - too much responsibility. <br /> <br />Anticipate what is going to happen. <br /> <br />How specifically can white government and community lead? <br /> <br />Access to decision making - government can convene meetings. Privileged government <br />has - elevate an issue and bring stakeholders to table. Question is how to do it <br />intelligently and maximize effects. Important for me to be here and talk about it. <br /> <br />stst <br />Grew up in suburbs - Baltimore. 1 family of color. 1 kid of color going to school - <br />brown - not black - called nigger. <br /> <br />st <br />Small percentage of minorities - people of color takes brunt - 1 ones - responsibilities - <br />education to offer time and time again - encourage others to come here. Government - <br />look at codes - some discriminatory codes exist. <br /> <br />By acknowledging history and not taking out codes, this can perpetuate the hatred or <br />feeling discriminated against. <br /> <br />If you take it out my kids will think I’m lying about how things were. If, keep boundaries <br />game doesn’t allow growth. Who are you keeping from coming here? Family wage jobs, <br />but people fight family wage companies from coming here. Why would people leave to <br />go back to more racially hostile environment than stay here? Devil you know is better <br />than the one you don’t - middle management doesn’t stay longer - feel minimized in their <br />position - need opportunities to grow. <br /> <br />Have five kids - bet you they won’t come back to Eugene. Offer very little to youth. No <br />matter what color. Go to Corvallis - Albany - they offer youth a lot more. <br /> <br />Next steps - how to continue so we aren’t starting over each time. <br /> <br />Agreed there is an existence of racism.
