stand out there. Now sometimes not only person. Want to make Eugene good place for
everyone. See change - but, small increments.

Need to be understood if come from different places. Employers need to understand -
some cultures quiet - don’t speak up. Don’t ask to be promoted. Need education for
everyone. About speaking up. Community involvement very important. Taught my kids
that. Three ways to get ahead - for doing so - receive things back.

Don’t’ want to spend time dancing around things. Want to talk about obstacles.

Participated in a lot of these. Trying not to do the complaining thing. Maybe helpful to
go through, but tired of saying them. Done it for last four or five years.

Affects everyone differently. Get frustrated to have dialogue - if not have follow-up.
Frustrating. Whether we like it or not have community growing.

Don’t have perceived idea where we go next. Want some concrete ideas of where to go
next. Feel disadvantaged about these discussions. Handicaps me. Naïve.

Incident - woman - told me she was abrupt. Teacher of son. Asked me about my skin
color. Thought it would be serious discussion about my son. Teachers need to be taught.

Lots of community working on issues, but not working together. School district.
Community. If not connection won’t be as much as help. Great to have forum. Taught
how to deal with things - deal with it in my own way. Don’t see how City connected
with others to deal with it. School, businesses.

Question - if Human Rights can serve as connection.

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) - school district, City - around issues, not sure,
how they use it. Don’t know if it could be vehicle. Don’t know how they use it.

Need to let community know it exists.

Don’t share information. Did have training on privilege as part of MOU.

Needs to be advertised.

Point I heard a lot -people don’t know they have avenue or recourse. Venue. Place for
complaints. Don’t go anywhere.

Have complained. Friends have. Get tired of doing it. Just hear okay. Want to hear
something. Just want it to be equitable. Level playing field.

Do have to make things known to get there. My goal is my kids to live in better
community. Not in my lifetime.

Fear of complaining. Afraid to lose job.
Communities of Color 26 July 12, 2006
