Want diverse community. But, experiences show system is racist. Doesn’t say people
bigoted. It’s the set up. Get jobs by who you know still. Set up not fault of anyone in
room, but our responsibilities. Have to take it out, look at it, and deconstruct it. Won’t
get better by holding hands. People look like me need to do something. We are the ones
who keep it in place. Complacent. If up to people of color, racism would be gone. Need
to know each other. If something happens to people I know, I’ll get mad. Don’t know
each other’s stories. If white - can go through month and not have to have conversation
with person of color. The more you don’t, the more uncomfortable it will be. Need to
create environments where we learn each other’s names.

Really, have problems if you are stopped 13 times and having this type of forum. Should
be some kind of action plan. Talk to officer after they stopped person of color. Need to
find the knuckleheads. Frustrating - have been unable to deal with what officer doing
with profiling. Need to eliminate problem officers. So people don’t fear them getting in
car, bike. Need to be held accountable. Protective of community.

Police going through training. Not changing. Not having an affect. You grew up here.
Know your rights. Others haven’t - really dramatic for them.

Have to be careful about addressing whole department. Wouldn’t do it, Know others
wouldn’t. Can’t speak for them all. Some things being done. Person outside police
being hired by Council. Change.

Brainstorm where to go from here. Maybe break into two or three major themes that can
be addressed.

Things I’ve heard:

-Creating solidarity in community - inclusive of mainstream European
American people and people from other cultures can come together and speak.
Injustices raised by all. Dialogue, justice important.

-MOU needs to be communicated.

-People need to know how to access - bring forward injustices.

-Reach beyond Eugene - larger communities

-Know each other - call for advise

-Schools - how to affect teachers. Government agencies - Police, others. How
to educate them about their biases

-Need to address training - have it, but not affecting change

Having avenues - look at what is being done. Lots of people don’t know, how can we
move forward from there?

Have doubts - things available. Human Rights Support System, MOU. Something clear.

Discuss we feel it’s working - things added, taking away.

Communities of Color 28 July 12, 2006
