<br />. <br /> <br />~ <br />28'7 <br /> <br />-- - :. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Chairman Simon of the Police Committee recommended that Charles Bascom be <br />employed as a Police Officer and placed on the payroll of the City at the reguihar <br />patrolman's salary, and that his salary be paid at the same time that others are <br />paid. Motion was made and seconded to confirm the appointment, and the vo~e being <br />in doubt, the ayes and nays were called, Councibnen voting aye: Simon, Bond and <br />Edwards. Nay: Lamb, Hendershott, and Zumwalt. The vote being tied, Mayor Large <br />stated that in view, of the age limit fixed for the employment of the police <br />officers heretofore he was obliged to vote against the appointment, and the motion <br />was declared lost. S. Internal Revenue office <br />for per mi ssi on to inc lose the hallway adjacent to t heir pre sent office in the <br />City Hall by sealing the end of the hall and opening a door through into their <br />present office, with the understanding that the same should be done at their own <br />expense, and no additional rental charge should be made. Motion was made, seconded <br />and carried to grant this request. <br /> <br />The following Resolution was presented, and on motion adopted: <br /> <br />RESOLUTION <br /> <br />RESOLVED that the Ci ty of Eugene, through its Mayor and <br />Common Council, does hereby extend to Langlwy Young, Ralph Young, <br />Charle's Young, and Virgil Hughes its recogni ti on of their prof!lpt <br />and heroic action in endeavoring to save the lives of the two <br />Police Officers from the Mill Race on Saturday night, June 2nd, <br /> <br />1934. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The following Resolution was fresented by the Police Committee, and on <br />motion duly seconded and carried was adopted. <br /> <br />RESOLUTION <br /> <br />~Y.HEREAS, City Police Officer, Jesse J. Jackson, on June 3, <br />1934 lost his life through an unfortunate accident during the <br />course of performing official duty, and <br />WHEREAS, he was known and recoglllzed as an officer of out- <br />standing character and ability, and enjoyed the respect and <br />friendship of all his acquaintances, <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City of 1'ugene, <br />through its Mayor and Council, that we deplore the unfortunate <br />circumstances which occasioned the death of this splendid officer <br />and citizen, and that we extend to his wife and child and other <br />members of his family our heartfelt sympathy in' this hour of <br />their deep sorrow. <br /> <br />"'" <br />. <br /> <br />~ <br />
