<br />Councilman Stewart stated it was time for the committee to consider the
<br />purchase of a fire truck. Councilman Bond wished the City Recorder to investigate
<br />prices on the various types Of-fire fighting equipment so a study can be made
<br />and bids called for and it was so ordered.

<br />Councilman Stewart stated that the representatives of the College Crest
<br />Fire District were to meet with the City Attorney for completion of their contract
<br />for rural fire protection."

<br />Counci~man Barette reported that the Oregon State Grone Commission would
<br />like to give the city a group of pheasants for Skinners Butte Park. After a
<br />short discussion the committee was instructed to investigate the cost of building
<br />cages for the pheasants and report back to the council.

<br />Councilman Barette stated he felt the City should proceed without further
<br />delay ~~th the installation of traffic lights at 13th and Willamette Streets
<br />and the City Recorder was instructed to secure the price of installation from
<br />C & S Electric who had installed the other lights on Willamette Street.

<br />Councilman Reid, Chairman of the Sewer Committee, reported
<br />city sewer connections had been discovered beyond the city limits.
<br />Engineer was sending out bills and collecting for the same, and in
<br />users failed to pay the bill, the service would be discontinued.
<br />
<br />Councilman Reid reporting on th~equest for a Sewer at 24th and Willamette
<br />Streets, stated it was the committee's recommendation that the ditch be iniproved
<br />and necessary culverts be installed until the time comes when those people wish
<br />to permanently improve the streets. Motion was made and seconded approving the

<br />Councilman Bond, Chairman of the Police Committee, recommended the transfer
<br />of a Retail Beer Class "C" License from Findlay's Lobby to Ralph E. and Isaac
<br />20~ Newman at 764 Willmnette Street. The recommendation was unanimously approved.

<br />Communication was presented from Donald M. Erb, President of the University
<br />of Oregon respectfully requesting the City of Eugene to vacate a certain area in
<br />Driverton's Addition as follows:

<br />Lots 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, in Block No. 23;
<br />Lots 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 16, 11, and 12 in Block No. 28;
<br />all of Blocks 16, 17, 18, 24, 25, 26, 27, 33, 34 and 35,' all
<br />in Driverton Adrntion to Eugene.
<br />(This block of land is bounded on the north by Twentieth Avenue, 0
<br />the east by Patterson Street, and on the south by Twenty-
<br />fourth Avenue).
<br />The matter was referred to the City Engineer to make a study bf the street situation
<br />21/ in that area and in the surrounding area and report back to the council.
<br />
<br />Councilman Bond reported that his committee had been working on the
<br />jail problem stating that the county had granted permission for the installation
<br />of a cage on the West side of the present county jail. The estimated cost for
<br />the erection of a jail is set at $443.00 and the Police Committee would recommend
<br />that this be done and paid for out of the Emergency Fund. Motion was made and
<br />22' seconded unanimously approving the recommendation.

<br />Communication was presented from Marshall Fields requesting an extension
<br />of time to make t,he payments on his property contract. The matter was
<br />2~ referred to the]inance Committee.

<br />The following department reports were presented: Annual r\?port of the
<br />Milk and Meat Inspector; annual report and report for the moni!J.h of December from
<br />the Police Department; annual report and report for the month of December from the
<br />Police Matron and a report for the month of December was presented from the City
<br />Engineer's Office. All reports were ordered placed on file. A statement of sewerag
<br />charges billed and collected was presented from the Eugene Water Board and ordered
<br />24- placed on file.
<br />
<br />Communication was presented from the Board of Appeals recommending that the
<br />Council grant the request of Duane Crabtree, asking for a waiver of the
<br />"set-back" on Fifth Avenue at the corner of Oak Street, he being willing to enter in 0
<br />the usual contract with the city covering the request. Motion was made and seconded
<br />25 unanimously approving the recommendation.
