Chezem, musical coElposer, for several <br />13 :1 years who evidently has been ejected by the owner. <br /> <br />:; The whole place is in a most deplorable condition, the ~.ouse at the rear is <br />i: unsani tary, the roof is a fire hazard, the wiring is dahgerous. The chimneys <br />~ while being built to the ground are overloaded with stove connections. The <br />ii woodshed is about to fall down and the barn is a fire ha zard. The yard is <br />:j overgrown with weeds and co~vered with junk. <br />I <br />:i We would recommend tha t the owner be notified to clean up the place, remove <br />;1 the woodshed and barn, repair plumbing where needed and rewire the house in <br />:: order to make it habitable for the class of people desirable in that locality. <br />:.'1' A motion was made, seconded, and carried, that the recommendation of the Building <br />.. Inspector be adopted. <br />:"~ <br />,'i <br />~ A letter from the Board of Appeals was read. <br />,j "The Board of Appeals has received a request from Miss Frances E. Baker asking <br />~ for a permit to build a six foot a~dition on the front of her house at <br />,I 1107 Twenty-fifth Avenue East. This addition would bring the front of the <br />14 :1 house wi thin thirteen feet of the sidewalk. As the owner of the adjoining <br />:i property has signed a waiver of objections to the request, the Board of <br />;; Appeals recommends that the request be granted." ~. <br />liOn motion made, seconded, and carried, the recommendation of the Board of Appeals <br />"I <br />:: was adopted. <br />01 <br />:1 <br />:1 The Library report for the months of June and July was read and also the <br />:: Police, Engineer's, Police Matron's and the Electrical Inspector's reports for <br />;' the month of July were read and all were ordered placed on file. The report from <br />~ the Eugene Water Board on sewage charges collected for the month of July was read <br />I :\ and ordered placed on file. <br /> <br />~ A petition presented by John Cunningham and signed by sixteen citizens was <br />~ read at this time. <br />.1 "We, the undersigned, hereby respectfully petition the Common COUDcil that <br />;! Wilbur Hyland, residing at 3rd and Lawrence, be restrained from destroying <br />:1 trees between Lawrence and Washington Streets on Third Ave.nue West, located <br />15 i: in the parking on the south side of Thir,d Avenue; ,and that he be further <br />:; required to clean up and remove the 1l,lll1ber that is piled in the street." <br />;1: Councilman Hawn said that Mr. Cunningham had been to see him and that he did not <br />:! go out to see the trees mentioned, but that he did send Mr. Lamb out, and Mr. <br />:': Lamb had reported that there were three trees in the parking, but that only one <br />.: cherry tree was worth saving. Councilman Barette stated that this was a vacant <br />:; corner and Mr. Hyland had pruchased it for business purposes and that he thought <br />i' it was in much better condition since Ivrr. Hyland had taken it over. The peti tion <br />:1 stated that there was lumber piled in the street and this matter was referred to <br />the Street Department to report back at the next meeting. <br /> <br />A request from H. P. Dixon for a leave of absence on account of being called <br />to the Army was read and also a request fronl Ray Hicks, Jr., for a leave of <br />16 absence on account of betng called to the Army, and on motion made, seconded, and <br />carried, the request of both of these gentlemen,t were granted. <br /> <br />. ~ <br />The resignations of Douglas E. Volz from the Fire Department and Charles <br />17 C. Lindsay from the Police Department were read and ordered placed on file. <br /> <br />A request of Cole Bros. Circus for permission to hold two performances in the <br />18 City of Eugene on the 9th of September was granted. <br /> <br />i~ A motion was made by Councilman Farrington and seconded by Stewart tha t the <br />19 :" Recorder be authorized to advertize for sealed bids for auditing the City's books <br />!~ for the f-iscal year beginning July 1, 1942 and anding June 30, 1943. Brownson sal.d tha t the mat ter had been .taken up <br />~ at the time and he supposed it was all cleared up, but that he would see that the <br />~ matter was taken care of. <br />Ii <br />Ii. Councilman Hawn asked regarding reports of inspections by the 1!'ire Depa rtment. <br />h He said he knew the Fire Department had had some difficulty regarding employment, <br />21 I: but tha t he thought these inspections should be kept up.
