On vote this motion <br />': was oarried. <br />I <br />I: In the event of absence of Mr. Davis, Councilman Stewart reporting for the <br />I~ street department reported that the eves ,of a building on East Broadway leaking <br />;: on the sidewalk. He stated that this was the building aoross the alley just east <br />23 II of the Eugene Hotel, known as 258 East Broadway and the leaking of the eves on <br />:: the sidewalk was annoying to the pedestrians. He stated this had been a nuisance <br />i,for two or three years and the matter had beeil oalled to the a ttention of the <br />j' . <br />i; owner and nothing done. Mr. stewart made a motion that the Recorder be instruoted <br />i: to address a letter to the owner of the property asking that this condition be <br />:, oorrected. This motion was seoonded by Bailey and on vote was oarried. <br />I' - <br />II <br />I,: Councilman Stewart reporting for the Fire and Water Committee brought up <br />It the question of salary to be paid to Chet Good, an employee of the Fire Depart- <br />I! mente Mr. Stewart stated that Mr. Good had worked for the Fire Department at <br />:1 different times, oommenoing November 1942 and had worked a total of 12 months; <br />i~ that he had gone back to work on the Department this November 1st; that he was <br />24:! a more valuable man to the department than a new man and t'hat he was reoommending <br />:: that Mr. Goodts salary be fixed at $166.00. After some disoussion a motion was <br />:i made by Stewart and seconded by Farrington and oa.rried that Mr. Good t S salary be <br />Ii placed at $166.00 per month. . <br />~ ~ <br />,: Counoilman Stewart also reported that the rear tires on truok No. 3 were <br />I: worn smooth and were unsafe on, the Slippery streets and th~t the department was <br />25~; in need to two new casings for this truck. That the casings would oost from <br />H $60.00 to $80.00 each. J. Cloyes addressed to Counoilman Bailey was read at this time. <br />!1 This letter was in regard to the sanitary conditions of the residenoe at 847 <br />26 I,: West 7th; that this _house was a fire hazard, that the.buildings should ~e <br />!' oondemmed for oocupanoy. After some disoussion a mot~on was made by Ba~ley and <br />Ii seconded by Hawn and oarried that the building be condemmed for occupanoy and <br />!! tha~_ the :Building Inspector take whate.ver steps were neoessary to oarry out this <br />'.1 prooeedure. <br />,! <br />I' <br />I <br />[I Councilman Barette reporting regarding the tree in front of the Best <br />Ii Cleaners at 831 East 13th. He stated that this was a walnut tree and the owner I <br />Ii of the property did not wanti t removed and, that they had trimmed the t-ree so tha tl <br />:: the limbs did not interfere with the neon_ Sign .of the tenant. In regard to the <br />I! walks and parking around the Eugene Foundry at 8th and Ferry, which had been re- <br />[I ferred to the Committee on October 9th, Councilman Bare.tte stated that the foundry <br />i had ohanged hands and that the new owner had promised to clean this up just as <br />Ii soon as he oould ,get anyone to remove the timbers. Counoilman Barette also. <br />I: reported that the committee had r,eoently investigated the Manerud Huntington Fuel <br />~ saw-dust pile and wished to deolare it a nuisance and were asking that it be <br />27 I, removed. He stated that if the fire was allowed to burn as it now was it would <br />i! burn for several years. Councilman Hawn stated that Maneurd Huntington had said <br />l1 it would be impossible to find employees to remove .this pile as. long as they were <br />II delivering the winters fuel. Counoil~n Hawn stated that he understood that this <br />,~ was th~ type of material that would be used the the new wood aloohol plant and it <br />~' w~s his understanding that this plant would be in operation soon after the 1st of <br />i,' the year and the inatter was referred to th~ Parks Comrni ttee to contact Manerud, <br />I: Huntington and investigate the possibilitiez of the wood aloohol plant using this <br />I; saw dust. . <br /> <br />t Sewer COmIni ttee - no report . <br />I; <br />I, A oomplaint had been reoeived from A. _ West Johnson regarding the breaking <br />'1 Ii of the drive-way to his parking lot at Broadway and Charnelton by Army truoks <br />: that ~d been stationed there overnight. Mr. Johnson was requesting that the <br />, 28 II'! City repair the walk. Counoilman ~wn stated he felt that the City was Obligated <br />;: to make the repairs and might be re~mbursed by the War Department.
