<br />PROTESTING THE REQUESTED CURTAILMENT.' MR. WENDT EXPLAINED TO THE COMMITTEE THAt DUE
<br />TO THE INCREASE IN COSTS OF' OPERATION, SPEClrlCALLY STATING THAT COSTS ~OR GASOLINE;
<br />OIL, TIRES~ INSURANCE, LABOR AND OTHER ITEMS HAD CONTINUED T0 INCREASE AND tHAT'6AY
<br />TIME AS,WELL AS NIGHT PATRONAGE HAD CONTINUED TO DECREASE AND THAT IT WAS NO LONGER
<br />POSSIBLE TO INCREASE THE PATRONAGE BY F"URNISHING NEW BUSSES, INCREASING ROUTE MILEAGE,'
<br />AND MAKING ROUTE CHANGES ~ITH DIRECT TRANSF'ER P0INTS, AND STILL THE PATRONAGE CONTINUED

<br />THE COMMITTEE EXPLORED SEVERAL ALTERNATES IN HOPES THAT SOMETHING COULD BE WORKED
<br />OUT TORE,LIEVE THE SITUATION., SOME OF' THE COUNCILMEN PRESENT, F'ELT THA,T TO CURTAIL THE
<br />NIGHT SERVICE WAS A STEP IN THE WRONG DIRECTION AND WOULD BE THE F'ORERUNNER TO COMPLETE
<br />ABANDONMENT OF' MASS TRANSPORTATI ON I N THE CI TY. I T WAS THE F'EELI NG OF' ALL PRESENT rHAT
<br />ACITY THE SIZE OF' EUGENE SHOULD NOT BE WITHOUT A MASS TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM AND~ IN
<br />CONCLUSION, I TWAS MOV,ED BY MR. SHEARER, SECONDED BY MR. HARTMAN, AND PASSED, THAT THE
<br />MAYOR APPOINT A CO~MITTEE F"ROMTHE COUNCIL TO ,MEET WITH THE MERCHANT'S DIVISION OF' THE
<br />CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TO DISCUSS THE ENTIRE BUS PROBLEM.
