The Public Works Director said he would issue <br /> orders for signing the hairpin turn. He also said it is the policy of the Public Works <br /> Department ~o grade streets of this type only once a year. <br /> 2 2. Council Appointment, Charles Teague - Mr. Anderson moved seconded by Dr. Purdy to accept <br /> the unanimous selection of Mr. Charles Teague, 2098 Olive Street, to fill the Council <br /> position being vacated by R. E. McNutt, Ward 4, for the term ending January 6, 1969. <br /> " Mr. Teague was selected from a field of six candidates. Motion carried. <br /> l <br /> " <br /> I <br /> " Dr. Purdy moved seconded by Mr. Lassen that Mr. Teague's term begin August 12, 1968. <br /> " <br /> I, Motion carried. ~ <br /> 3 3. Fires on South Betelson Road - Mr. Lassen reported there have been two fires on South <br /> Bertelson Road in the past week in the area south of 11th on the west side and asked <br /> I that the existing rundown housing in the area be abated. <br /> " -' <br /> 4 4. City Elections - Mr. Lassen mentioned that at the last two City elections there has <br /> been a mixup at his voting precinct regarding the opening of the polls and lack of <br /> notification to poll workers. Discussion followed regarding the possibility of having << <br /> the County Election Department run the City elections, and the Ffrran-c'e Director stated ' :/ <br /> this was not possible due to the conflict with other legal election procedures. <br /> 5 5. 30th Avenue Overpass - Mr. Wingard asked about the status of the proposed 30th Avenue <br /> overpass, and the Public Works Director stated plans are in the design stage and <br /> I' that there are still some questions regarding the location of the overpass. The City <br /> Manager stated he had been in close contact with the residents of the area regarding <br /> the location. <br /> 6 6. Sewers, Bethel-Danebo - Mr. Lassen asked if the City was doing any sewer work in the <br /> Bethel-Danebo area, and the Public Works Director stated two area were under considera- <br /> tion and the other areas have been completed. " <br /> i <br /> : Mr. Lassen moved seconded by Mrs. Lauris that Items 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the Committee report be <br /> I. received and fi led. Motion carried. <br /> 7 )1 7. Sidewalk Installation - The Public Works Department recommended installation of side- <br /> walks at' the following locations, with property owners of affected properties to be <br /> given until September 1, 1968 for completion of the described sidewalks, and that all <br /> " walks not installed by that date be advertised for bid for construction by City contract: <br /> I <br /> a. 452 West 27th Place - Owned by Merlyn N. Naffziger. Mrs. Lauris moved seconded <br /> " by Mr. Lassen to approve the Public Works Department recommendation. Motion tarried. <br /> I . <br /> b. Southwest corner 27th'Place and Lincoln - Property owned by Harold W. Pollock. <br /> Dr. Purdy moved seconded by Mr. Anderson to approve the Public Works Department <br /> , recommendation. Motion carried. <br /> c. Northwest corner 27th Place and Lincoln - Property owned by Philard L. Rounds. <br /> Mr. An~erson moved seconded by Mr. McNutt to approve the recommendation of the <br /> Public Works Department. Motion carried. '.' <br /> :: <br /> d. Northwest corner 26th and Oak - Owned by Mary Wiley. Dr. Purdy moved seconded by <br /> Mr. McNut;t to approve the recommendation of the Public Works Department. Motion carried. <br /> e. Southwest corner 25th and Oak - Property owned by Arthur A. Wick. Dr. Purdy moved <br /> seconded by Mr. McNutt to approve the recommendation of the Public Works Department, <br /> with the decision to remove trees in the area of the sidewalk construction to be <br /> made at a later date. Motion carried. <br /> f. Southwest corner 18th and City View - Owned by George Keating. Mrs. Lauris moved <br /> seconded by Mr., McNutt to approve the recommendation of the Public Works Department. <br /> Motion carried. <br /> Mr. Lassen moved seconded by Mrs. Lauris that Item 7a through 7f of the Committee report be approved. t <br /> Motion carried. <br /> 8 8. Proposed Reduction Baggage Service, Southern Pacific - The City Manager read a letter .. <br /> from Southern Pacific Company stating information regarding propos,ed reduction of <br /> baggage service to Eugene would be forthcoming. <br /> 9 :~ 9. Employment, Foreign Students - The City Manager read a letter from SylCoker" Broughton <br /> Gilpin, and A. Yaya Fanusie thanking the City for help in assisting them in gaining <br /> employment in the Eugene area so they may remain in the United States and continue <br /> their education. <br /> . <br /> '/ <br /> ~ 8/12/68 - 14 <br />
