For Group R occupancies, the provisions in Subdivi- <br />sion 1. F. of Subsection 3802~b} shall not apply to existing <br />structures so long as the R occupancy is in substantial com- <br />pliance with all present codes, and equipped with smokeproof <br />towers, combination standpipes, and supervised fire alarms <br />with manual pull stations. Upon recommendation of the fire <br />marshal and. approval of the Structural Specialty Code Board <br />of Appeals Group R occupancies may be permitted to have a <br />less extensive sprinkler system protecting only the exit sys- <br />tem of the building, in lieu of other requirements of Subsec- <br />tion 3$02~b}. The exit-protection must include automatic <br />sprinklers i n al 1 exit ways, automatic sprinkler heads i n <br />each individual living unit, and an approved battery or elec- <br />. trically operated smoke detector in each living unit. Sprink- <br />ler heads within living units shall be located no closer than <br />four feet and no further than six feet from the corridor door. <br />Side-wall mounted sprinkler heads may be used within a living <br />unit if the spray from such heads will completely cover the <br />door area tv be protected. <br />B. Smoke detectors shall be governed by Subdivision <br />1210~a}2. <br />X10} Subsection 3$03 a , General, is hereby amended to read: <br />~a} General.
