b, The existing structure is not remodeled, in any <br />single calendar year, tv the extent of more than 25 per- <br />cent of its market value immediately prior to remodeling. <br />At such time as an existing structure other than a <br />Group R occupancy is deemed by the building official to <br />present a life or safety hazard to its occupants or is <br />remodeled to the extent of more than 25 percent of its <br />market value, an approved automatic fire extinguishing <br />system shall be installed throughout, including the base- <br />ment. <br />3. Existing Group R occupancies shall comply with sub- <br />section 1, above except that Group R occupancies in substan- <br />tial compliance with all present codes, and equipped with <br />smokeproof towers, combination standpipes, and supervised fire <br />alarms with manual pull stations, upon recommendation of the <br />fire marshal and approval of the Structural Specialty Code <br />Board of Appeals, may be permitted to install a less extensive <br />sprinkling system, protecting only the exit system of the <br />building, in lieu of the other requirements of this section. <br />The exit protection system must include automatic s rinklers <br />~n all exit w p <br />ays, an automatic sprinkler head in each indivi- <br />dual living unit, and a nationally recognized testing labora- <br />tory-approved battery or electrically operated smoke detector <br />~n each living unit. Sprinkler heads within living units <br />shall be located no closer than four ~4} and no further than <br />six ~fi} feet from the corridor door, Side wall mounted s rink- <br />ler heads ma be • p <br />y used w~th~n living units ~f the spray from <br />such heads will completely cover the door area to be rotected. <br />25 Section 10.311 ~ p <br />~ } of the Uniform Fire Code ~s amended to add: <br />~f} Location of Combination Stand i e S stem. A combination <br />standpipe shall be provided for each stairway or smoke- roof enclo- <br />p <br />sure which extends from the top floor to the ground story in <br />buildings four or more stories in height. Combinative stand i e <br />s stems shall have p p <br />Y outlets so located that all portions of the <br />building and all rooms and other spaces are within 20 feet of the <br />nozzle attached to 100 feet of hose. <br />~1} Size, Combination standpipe systems shall be not <br />less than four inches in diameter in buildings in which the <br />highest outlet is less than l5 feet from the fire de artment <br />connection ~ ~ p, <br />and shall be not less than six inches ~n diameter <br />where the highest outlet is 15 feet or more above that connec- <br />tion. <br />~2} Construction and Testin . Fittings and connections <br />shall be of sufficient strength to withstand 300 pounds of <br />water pressure per+square inch when ready for service. All <br />comb~nat~on standpipes shall be tested hydrostatically to with- <br />stand such pressure far two hours, but in no case shal] the <br />pressure be less than 50 pounds per square inch above the <br />maximum working pressure. <br />~3} Riser shut-off valve and drain.
